The purpose of training and developing within any organizations is to improve the overall effectiveness of goods, product and services, competitiveness, and emphasizes growth in all aspects. It also increases productivity, develop employee turnover, increases financial gain, and lessens the managerial and supervisory positions. Training and developing is essential to obtain but many employers have different perspectives of what training and developing means for its organization. Verizon is one of the leaders in innovative wireless communication and in delivering broadband to businesses, mass market, wholesale, government, and it services over 80 million customers across the world. The importance of training and developing is extremely critical for any organization of this size to maintain and remain one of the best in its industry.
Needs Assessment
Regarding training, Verizon secured a place within the top 100 ranked organizations in Training Top 100, Working Mother 100 Best, and Computerworld. Additionally, Verizon ranks No. 15 by Training magazine (Reuters, 2009). “Verizon’s total training investment for 2008 totaled $344 million, and employees dedicated 11.7 million hours to training. The vast majority of training was in the areas of customer service, management development, and the broadband, mobile and IP segments of the business” (Verizon, 2009, p. 1).
Although Verizon has a reputation for top quality training, distinctively with customer service, management, and innovative technological advancements, research shows that safety is a concern that should be further evaluated. Verizon fact sheets illustrate, that in 2008, three work related fatalities occurred. A line worker, among one of the most recent incidences, was electrocuted because his bucket touched a power line.
