Kraler explains to the families how he and Miep will be there to attend to the families as they are not allowed to exit the Annex. By doing this, Kraler and Miep are putting their own lives on the line because if they were to be discovered the punishment that applies to the Jews, would apply to them. Miep and Kraler also have to forge ration cards, and are giving up some of their own supply of food, as well as setting aside time in their days to see to the Annex family. This is later explained in the play by Anne when she writes in her diary about how they would suffer the same fate. Anne is almost always enthusiastic, and does not allow herself to be bogged down by the confinement of the Annex by dreaming of the outside as demonstrated here, “The best part about it is that I have a feeling that friends are coming. Who knows? Maybe I’ll be back in school by fall” (703). After news of the invasion beginning, Anne’s hope of the war ending has been restored, and she begins to plan for what she is to do when let out of the Annex. Anne, with her diary, seems to always try to make the best of her
