In December 1938, a ship named MS Schwabenland set off from the German city of Hamburg, on an expedition to Antarctica along with 57 men. In January of 1939, the ship arrived on what is now known as Princess Martha Coast in Queen Maud Land, where Norway had claimed. However, the Germans ignored this and charted the region, and planted Swastikas in the ice. They named the region after the ship, naming it Neuschwabenland, meaning New Swabia. One objective of the expedition was to find an area where they could build a whaling station. Germany needed whale fat, as Germany was trying to become a self-sufficient nation as they may be in war soon, and whale fat was an important raw material for the nation. …show more content…
Therefore, the Germans have more than enough of a reason to want to build a settlement. In addition,, a base in Antarctica would be very hard to find by the Allies and it could be a German stronghold around the Southern Hemisphere, so Germany had many reasons to attempt building a base in Antarctica. The question is, could a German settlement in Antarctica strive? Antarctica is believed to have a large deposits of natural gas, which if the Germans found it and harnessed it, they will have gas which they can utilise to make electricity. Furthermore, when treated properly, they can be used as normal car petrol, as well as diesel for their submarines and ships. Therefore, if they were to construct a base or a settlement, there is a high possibility that they could find a source of energy in the shape of natural gas. Coal is another abundant mineral in Antarctica, and it can easily be used to generate electricity and fuel for machinery in the settlement. Moreover, Antarctica is very well known for its volcanic activities, and is full of geothermal energy that can also be harnessed. It could be used for generating power in a geothermal power plant, as is the case in Iceland, or to heat homes or as a source of warmth. Another feature of Antarctica that can help the German survive is warm water lakes, such as Lake Vanda. Lake Vanda can reach …show more content…
The events supporting its existence seem too much for it to be a coincidence, such as the statements made by Karl Doenitz and Richard E. Byrd as well as the arrival of U-530 and U-977. It most likely won’t be long until the base, or its remnants are discovered. However, until solid evidence is found, it will remain as a controversy and will not be a fact. But if this base actually exists, the Nazi Germans there may be stocking up munitions and weapons and waiting, for when it is their chance to attack and establish a new world
