Argitektoniese karakter: Gotiese boustyl.

The building that has taken my interest is Notre Dame de Paris, which literally means “Our Lady of Paris” in French. When one thinks of Gothic architecture, majority will think of Notre Dame as it is one the most significant French catholic cathedral that is distinctively Gothic. Because Notre Dame has seen many reconstruction in its days, its early construction in the period 1160s is characterized as Early Gothic and adopt similar pointed arch that transcends from late Romanesque. Notre Dame’s early gothic style then slowly evolved in 13th century when High Gothic began to achieve further light, tall and yet majestic. Clerestory windows had changed from one window holed in a wall, into two windows united by elaborate window tracery and colourful rose window. 1…

Notre-Dame of Paris bears all the structural features of a Gothic cathedral including the famous rose window. By far, the Gothic style has influenced the entire design of Notre-Dame of Pairs. Notre Dame Cathedral was built in the beginning of the Gothic architectural movement, which coincided with the rise in veneration of the Virgin Mary. Thus the name for the Cathedral is “Notre Dame”; French for “Our Lady” a common religious term for the Virgin Mary2. The reason that she became one of the more widely popular religious figures was her sympathetic appeal as a mother who lost her son and religion had started to appeal to the people’s emotions rather than their spiritual values3. Another cultural change that came about as the Dark Ages began to end was that the Church commenced to showcase the power of God by creating grandiose structures to worship him in. Finally the developments of flying buttresses were a major development in architecture and one of the distinguishing qualities of the Gothic style. As with any changes in culture in history these changes were mirrored in the styles of architecture that were popular in the day.…

A building is more than an assemblage of materials to provide a shelter for man. It is an expression of the society that created it, its forms shaped by the outlook, values, orientation and maturity of the society, and reflecting the nature, strengths and weaknesses of the various aspects of the society. It in turn shapes and directs the society in its role as a container for its activities and as a physical expression of its culture. The impact of a building often lasts far beyond the ideas expressed in and by it, as the architecture of Imperial Rome has even today an effect upon the Italian people by recalling to them the achievements of the past and allowing them to share vicariously in its grandeur and achievements rather than to use their own efforts to develop an architecture and culture relevant to their own time. As our society becomes more urban, buildings form an ever increasing percentage of our physical environment. Their role as a physical container of our activities, forming a constant concrete referent to our actions and thoughts, increases the need for a stronger understanding of their effect upon the society, and an ability to express well in them the philosophy, outlook, and feelings of our society. A clear understanding of the role of buildings in history can help us greatly toward a better understanding of the problem. Our knowledge of the architecture of the past must often be reinterpreted as our understanding of it grows, and as we gain historical perspective and escape many of the biases of previous periods. Our understanding of the Gothic period has changed from an outright rejection during the Renaissance, of the emotionality expressed in it, to a structuralistic explanation concurrent with the development of structural theory and the technological age. Today, because of the subsequent development and…

When we hear about Gothic architecture, we immediately imagine buildings of this style: Cologne Cathedral, Notre-Dame de Paris, Mont Saint-Michel and so on. They all seem to share a number of common features: they are tall, thin, produce ethereal impression and with all their form reach for the sky, thus tuning people to a solemn mood. It is less known, however, although completely logical, that Gothic style is not homogenous, and the Gothic structures from one region and period of time may be rather different from the ones found in other place, in different time.…
