Diego Velázquez and Pablo Picasso were two of Spain’s incredible artists. However, their artwork was drastically different. Picasso was a cubism artist. He createdhis art with lots of shapes, specifically cubes. Velázquez was King Philip IV of Spain's official painter. He painted realistic portraits for the royal family to capture historical events. In 1656, Velázquez painted, Las meninas, which translates to, Lady in waiting. The main focus of Las meninas is the princess, however, Velázquez chose his title based off of the ladies in waiting that were assisting to the princess. Years later, Pablo Picasso began interpreting Velázquez painting, Las meninas. Picasso made 58 interpretations of Las meninas that were

Picasso makes the princess look cartoony and boxy. Another difference is the setting of the painting. Picasso did not include the setting of the original Las meninas. When Velázquez painted Las meninas, ithad a very interesting setting. We saw lots of paintings that were hung in a dark room. Velázquez painted himself into the painting. In Las meninas,Velázquez is painting. These features of setting were not included in Picasso’s interpretation of Las meninas. All of these differences show that Picasso and Velázquez have different styles of painting. Although there are many differences between the two paintings, there are still similarities. Both the original Las meninas painting, and Picasso’s interpretation include the princess. Both of the paintings also have the the princess wearing the same dress. Another similarity between these two paintings is that they both have dark backgrounds. They highlight the people, not the background. Picasso and Velázquez both include a lady caring for the princess. Velázquez was the royalties portrait painter. He included all of the ladies in waiting assisting the princess which shows the preparation the …show more content…
I believe that Velázquez created Las meninas as another painting for the royal family, but instead of focusing in on the Queen and King, he chose to highlight the princess and her attendants. Perhaps that princess was preparing for an event that was particularly important to the child. Instead of highlighting just the royalty, Velázquez chose to incorporate the ladies in waiting. This captures the team that works to prepare the princess for an event. I think that Picasso chose to interpret Las meninas, because it will allow him to get more ideas for his next painting. He may have also chose to interpret Las meninas because he liked the painting, and wanted to add his own twist to it. Picasso and Velázquez are both incredible artists, that have made some spectacular pieces. Though their art may be very different, it can still have similarities. Both Picasso and Velázquez shared Sources:

Las Meninas by Diego Velazquer is a very complex painting. When you look at the painting the focal point could be anyone. The first thing you notice is that the Princess and the Maids are focusing on each other. You will see the artist and the King and Queen in mirrors. You have to look at clues to tell you who is really the focus of the painting. The maids are really only there in the title, but they are not the focus. The King and Queen could be the focus, but why they be. The painting is supposed to be about the Princess and the Maids, but they are all looking at each other in the painting. As you examine each of the characters of the painting, you notice subtle differences. All of the figures, not including the Princess and the Maids, appear to be shaded darker. The clothing is darker, and the figures are not as detailed. The Maids are put in lighter clothing and detailed, but they are not the focus. When…

Las Meninas is a pictorial summary and a commentary on the essential mystery of the visual world, as well as on the ambiguity that results when different states or levels interact or are juxtaposed. The painting of The Royal Family also known as Las Meninas has always been regarded as an unsurpassable masterpiece. According to Palomino, it ‘was finished ' in 1656, and, while Velàzquez was painting it, the King, the Queen, and the Infantas Marìa Teresa and Margarita often came to watch him at work. In the painting, the painter himself is seen at the easel; the mirror on the rear wall reflects the half-length figures of Philip IV and Queen Mariana standing under a red curtain. The Infanta Margarita is in the center, attended by two Meninas, or maids of honor, Doña Isabel de Velasco and Doña Marìa Sarmiento, who curtsy as the latter offers her mistress a drink of water in a bùcaro—a reddish earthen vessel –on a tray. In the right foreground stand a female dwarf, Mari-Bàrbola, and a midget, Nicolàs de Pertusato, who playfully puts his foot on the back of the mastiff resting on the floor. Linked to this large group there is another formed by Doña Marcela de Ulloa, guardamujer de las damas de la Reina – attendant to the ladies-in-waiting—and an unidentified guardadamas, or escort to the same ladies. In the background, the…

Velazquez' Las Meninas is a masterpiece of Spanish Baroque painting, meaning irregular. It makes the statement of illusion versus reality. You would have to wonder though, if this painting revolves of the life of Velazquez, the artist who was an individualist painter of the Baroque, in the seventeenth century Counter-Reformation Spain, or is this a true family portrait of King Philip IV and Queen Mariana with their child. The portrait Las Meninas has always had questions that surrounded its meaning or iconography. There is a mirror perspective of the King and Queen, but is it their reflection in the mirror on the back wall or is it an actual portrait of them?…

The formal qualities involved in Diego Velasquez’s Las Meninas consist of space, color and light along with many others. Here Velasquez utilizes space to place the infantana princess at the focal center of the painting. He used many spacing techniques to add intrigue and story line to his piece. This painting has been interpreted many different ways and has also been a great influence on European art. The background of the painting appears to reflect a painting taking place within a painting. Rembrandt, in the Netherlands, was at the height of his career, renowned for his portraitures, landscapes and narrative scenes from the Bible. Velazquez, in Spain, was an exceptional court painter for King Philip IV and painted many portraitures for him already. Seen in Rembrandt's Self Portrait, at this point he is confident and affluent and shows it with his self-assured pose in 16th century costume, likely referring to the great master artists of the Renaissance. Unlike Rembrandt, Velazquez is seen in a rather dark shirt or vest with a very simple golilla neck collar. Velazquez’s portrait is physically smaller, with dimensions of 45 x 38 cm while Rembrandt’s portrait is much larger at 91 × 75 cm.…

The fact that our generation eats more fast food than ever before makes this experiment interesting, along with Morgan’s antics and humor. The main claim behind this documentary film is that the abundance of fast food chains, the fatty foods that they serve, and the vast amount of people that eat at these restaurants are all contributing factors in the epidemic of obesity in the United States. The facts and evidence in Morgan’s research is alarming, as well as the results of Morgan’s experiment in this informative, yet entertaining documentary.…
