Dieppe Raid
3 now charged in Markham murder

Apr 15, 2011 Kenney McGordy YorkRegion.com Staff Reporter

Investigators have arrested two Toronto men in last year’s home invasion and homicide in Markham.

And, police probing the death of Bich-Ha Pan, 53, who was gunned down Nov. 8 inside her Helen Avenue home in Markham, said today they expect more arrests will be made in the case, which shocked residents of the quiet neighbourhood near Kennedy Road and Hwy. 407.

Mrs. Pan’s husband, Huei-Hann, 57, was also shot and seriously wounded during the attack. He has since been released from hospital.

York police arrested a man yesterday in the Jane Street/Finch Avenue area of North York and a second man yesterday at Maplehurst Correctional Complex in Milton, Det.-Sgt. Larry Wilson said Friday.

David Mylvaganam, 22, of Toronto and 31-year-old Eric Carty, also of Toronto are charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Police arrested the Pans’ daughter, Jennifer, 24, about three weeks after the incident, charging the Markham woman with first-degree murder, attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

She was to appear at the Newmarket courthouse by video Friday, police said. When charged by York police, Mr. Carty was in prison after being arrested for first-degree murder in connection to the 2009 slaying of a 24-year-old Toronto man.

In the meantime, York police are looking for at least two more suspects, Det.-Sgt. Wilson said, uring those involved in this horrendous crime to seek legal counsel and turn themselves in immediately.

However, police would not discuss the relationship between the two men arrested and Jennifer Pan. Police would also not comment on a motive for the shootings.

Police were called to the Pans’ Markham home at about 10:30 p.m. Nov. 8. Officers were told three gunmen demanded cash and valuables before Mrs. and

In the case of the People v. Lewie, Michael Flint pleaded guilty to two counts of depraved indifference murder for the horrific murder of 8 year old Colbi Bullock. The defendant’s girlfriend Alicia Lewie, and mother to Colbi was charged with both involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment due to Ms. Lewie failing to get the child the medical treatment he so desperately needed. In my opinion, Alicia Lewie could undoubtedly be charged with both child endangerment and involuntary manslaughter. Involuntary manslaughter is charged when severe negligence or reckless conduct causes an accidental death to occur. In this case, Ms. Lewie was exceptionally negligent when leaving her child with a man who was known to be extremely violent throughout…

On the morning of December 18, 1992, two brothers were shot and killed in their Houston home. Police were called by a neighbor who heard the gunshots, and then seen a “dark colored” car fleeing from the house. It was later found out that defendant, Genovevo Salinas, was at the residence where the murders took place the night before December 18th. When officers went to Salinas’ house, they arrived to a dark blue vehicle that matched the witness’s account of the car. Police asked Salinas a few questions, he let the officers have his shotgun, and then the police asked him to come down to the station to answer a few questions so they could “clear him as a suspect.”…

A lot would be gained to the story if it was told from the third-person point of view. The story would include the thoughts of the two women. First person limits the reader to Mala's perspective, and third person is told from multiple points of view. The reader would know why the two women followed the three suspects. Mala mentions, "Without warning, the suspects bounded down the stairs and out the door, followed wordlessly by the two women. I did what New Yorkers do best and avoided eye contact." (11). The three suspect's perspectives would include their reaction to not getting arrested (11). I wonder what the police thought when they were unable to arrest the three suspects (11). The writer mentions, "The police later told me they had always been sure that they had the right guys, but a lack of physical evidence made it impossible to hold anyone in custody."…
