Differences between individuals in society are the defining factors of their character.
These dissimilarities are the ways in which people, animals, objects, etc. are not alike. One issue with the word differences is its connection to the word discrimination. Discrimination usually causes a negative connotation that may affect many people and affect their outlook on life. Discrimination is the treatment or opinion of a certain group of individuals. Many times, discrimination involves developing a stereotyped opinion of a certain group of individuals based on race, gender, etc. An example of discrimination would be the view of men being better than women at work. Men and women should get the same pay, however that is unlikely in most fields of work. On the other hand, the word difference has a positive, celebrating connotation, where dissimilarities are honored. Differences define humans in many ways. They shape the life style and personality of anyone. Without disparity, society would never be able to develop properly. Distinctive differences can be found everywhere, like in the play Romeo and
Juliet. Romeo and Juliet is a play that was written by William Shakespeare. It is a tragic love story between the two main characters, Romeo and Juliet. One example of differences defining humans or characters are the contrasts between the houses of Montague and Capulet. Both houses have differences because of a long standing feud. This feud defined how they treated one another, how they acted towards one another, and their overall character. These variations are the defining factors between the two sides that caused their long standing feud and the personalities of everyone involved, no matter good or bad. This develops and shows the personality of the characters in each house except for two. Romeo and Juliet are both from differing houses, yet they deeply love one another. The two had differing ideologies about the feud than their families. This helped define their personality and their need for each other, not matter the stakes, which was apparent throughout the entire play. Their differences, in terms of family, drove their similar personalities towards each other, however in the end their families their families differences killed them. Defining moments of differing personal identities appeared in many areas, like in the musical West Side Story. West Side Story is a movie about a boy and a girl, associated with two different gangs, who find love. This musical is like a spin-off of the story Romeo and Juliet in a present time period. Many differences can be found throughout the musical that define the characters involved. One example from the musical, that is similar to that of Romeo and Juliet, includes the differing opinions of the two gangs, the Sharks and the Jets. Many fights have took place over the territory. Both groups have defining differences like relations, abilities, and character traits. One difference some could see are the two major races throughout the musical Puerto Rican and American. Although it is a big difference, this is not a difference that defines humans because it is discriminatory view not every individual shares. These differences develop the overall identities of the gangs, which are similar in some areas. Without the differences the entire plot of the musical and audience’s connection to the gangs would be changed. This would have a major effect on the overall theme of the movie; humans do not kill with bullets and guns, but with hate. The second example from the musical involves its two main characters, Tony and Maria. The two main characters had differing views, like Romeo and Juliet, on the relationships Americans and Puerto Ricans could have. They believed it was possible to love one another while their gangs did not. Tony and Maria's beliefs defined their mostly moral behavior and their relationship. Without differences, the musical’s main message would not be clear and all of the characters would be the same, making it boring and non-inspirational. Not only are defining variations found in musicals, they are also found in real-world situations. Differences not only define characters, they define humans and their type of personality. Personalities can be true and just or dishonest and untrue. One example of disparity between humans involves money. If Jim found a wallet on the ground and turned it into the proper authorities, while Joe kept the wallet for himself; some distinct dissimilarities are presented. Jim’s personality is considerably developed and defined by his actions because they show the good side of humanity. Through his actions one can infer that he has been raised in a loving home where he has been taught good values. On the other hand, Joe most likely did not have those values instilled. One is noble and the other is dishonest; these two types of personalities are present in society today. This shows the differences between the two that have defined their life style and personal identity. A second real-life example involves work ethic. Two students, who attend East Union, include Lane and Kanyon. Lane is a student with little work ethic. When given work, Lane does not always strive to his full potential. On the other hand, Kanyon strives to reach his full potential. He frequently has a strong, solid work ethic. The two work ethics define how both students act and shows their overall personality. Kanyon has an intelligent, hard working, and fun personality, while Lane has a sarcastic, time wasting, and devious personality. These two work ethics are present in society and determine those who thrive or disappear in life. Dissimilarities are the defining moments of life that should be celebrated. Human’s differences are the defining aspects of life that create a true personality no one can imitate. Without a true personality no one would be different, majorly affecting the overall health of the society. Many examples of differentiation defining characters, groups of characters, humans, and even society can be found in plays, musicals, and in real-life situations. Dissimilarities are an important part of society and are the most effective tool in defining each individual human. Differences are valuable because different people make the world go around. “It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences….”
