Explain what is meant by:
Diversity
A dictionary meaning means a “range and variety of possibilities”. It simply means that the children and families i work with will come from a range of backgrounds with a variety of lifestyles both socially, culturally and economically.
Equality
Equality is seeing each and every child as an individual, as equals as each other, regardless of background.
Inclusion
This simply means to be involved and included without barriers to participation.
Describe the potential effects of discrimination (both positive and negative)
Where there are differences there is the possibility of discrimination, whereby people can be treated less favourably due to these differences, whether they are class division, gender, ability or race etc.
Negative assumptions are inferred on the value and capability of these individuals which will effect an individual’s self image, self esteem and self confidence.
This leads to barriers whereby the individuals cannot meet their full potential; they will not progress and experience success and become therefore excluded.
In sum discrimination is the denial of an individual’s rights to well-being and to learning.
The positive effects are that by working towards being inclusive these barriers are actively taken down so that every child and young person becomes a valued member and are given the opportunity to achieve and flourish.
