Checking for hazards, both indoors and outdoors, is a crucial part of health and safety when working with children. At my placement, the staff do a risk assessment every morning before the children come in. This includes the garden as well as every room in the setting. By doing this, they are ensuring the safety of the children, and making sure that all risks are managed, or at least made aware of. One way to do this is by creating an inclusive environment. At the nursery i’m at, they do this by ensuring they have multicultural dolls, dressing up costumes that are from different cultures as well as cards and games in different languages, e.g. Polish, Russian. If they do not recognise the adult then they will have to ask for identification and the “password” which would have been given by the parent. This is to ensure that the person collecting the child is who they say they are. The password is confidential and nobody else except the parents and staff should know it unless the parents have told someone who is collecting their child. The children are also signed in as they walk through the door by whoever opens it. It is very important that they do this straight away as they may not do the register for a little while after they have entered the building. If they are not signed in and there is a fire alarm then they may not know that the child is there. They are also signed out of the nursery as they are collected, and their parent/guardian will sign to say that they are now responsible for the
