Differences between Nationalism and Patriotism-which is better for nation building

What is nationalism? Nationalism means to give more importance to unity by way of a cultural background, including language and heritage. Nationalism is also a feeling that one`s country is superior to another in all aspects. It also can be a little aggressive and radical by nature. It also makes one to think only of one`s country`s virtues and makes one try to find justification for the mistakes made in the past. On the other hand, patriotism means the love for a nation, with more emphasis on values and beliefs and is merely is a feeling of admiration for a way of life. It is also passive by nature because people all over the world are considered equal. Patriotism also pertains to value responsibilities rather than just valuing loyalty towards one`s own country and enables people to understand both the shortcomings and improvements made. Based on statements above, I think patriotism is better for nation-building. Nation-building is the process of constructing or structuring a national identity using the power of the state. This process aims at the unification of the people within the state so that it remains politically stable and viable in the long run. Nation-building can involve the use of propaganda or major infrastructure development to foster social harmony and economic growth. The first and most important reason I think patriotism is better for nation-building is because it allows individuals to care about their country as a whole. To put it in a simpler way, it allows them to think twice before taking an action and making decisions that are going to affect their nation. For example, a visitor from America would never behave indecently in Malaysia because he or she is aware that it would bring bad name to their country. This will increase our respect towards their country which would lead to the rapid growth of their

As Pei points out--there are a number of differences between nationalism in this country and nationalism in other countries. First, nationalism in this country is not created by the state as it is in some other countries. Our nationalism is produced by the common citizens. American nationalism is also unique, as it’s not based on the belief that we’re ethnically superior because there’s a mix of so many ethnicities. We as Americans base our nationalism in pride in our government and democracy instead. Unlike nationalism in other countries, American nationalism is based on our present and future…

Although, I am discussing about compare and contrast the concepts of nationalism and patriotism. Nationalism is considered by respect of the nation, a feeling of national superiority, an uncritical acceptance of national, state, and political authorities, a control of unsure attitudes toward the nation, a preference to define one’s own group by criteria of descent, race, or cultural affiliation, and derogation of groups not considered to be part of the nation. Nationalism and patriotism both show the relationship of an individual towards his or her nation. The two are often confused and usually believed to mean the same thing. However, there is a huge difference between nationalism and patriotism. Nationalism means to give more importance to accord by way of a cultural background, including language and heritage. During the World War One there were two kinds of nationalism, the desire of subject people for independence and the desire of independent nations for dominance and prestige. Patriotism can be compared to the structure of a building. It keeps the building standing tall and strong. Without it the building would crumble. When we think of patriotism we think of America. Patriotism is a love and devotion to one's country, so it is not limited to only America. Marquis de La Fayette was a French patriot who served as a general for France yet received no pay. He is just as much a patriot as our George Washington or Poland`s Kazimierz Pułaski. They all did things to serve their country whether it be serving with no pay, being a general, or even becoming the first American president. Many people believe that they are patriotic. But, what truly makes one patriotic? In the late 18th century Americans personified patriotism.…
