Please define the following types of abuse and list some the the sign and or symptoms associated with each type of abuse.
Physical Abuse - Definition
Physical abuse is actual or threatened touching which the recipient has not consented to. Too cause pain or harm to the person.
Examples of physical abuse are such as
Hitting
Scratching
Kicking
Involuntary isolation
Misuse of medication
Restraining without a justifiable reason
A history of unexplained falls or minor injuries especially at different stages of healing.
Signs/symptoms
Some of the signs of physical abuse are :
Multiple bruising
Fractures
Burns
Bed sores
Fear
Depression
Sexual Abuse - Definition
Sexual abuse is defined by sexual acts or physical contact where the vulnerable adult was unable to give consent or was pressured into consent.
The forcing of unwanted sexual activity by use of threats or coercion.
Examples of Sexual Abuse are
Rape or attempted rape
Sexual Assault and Harassment
None contact abuse e.g. voyeurism and pornography.
Signs/symptoms
Some of the signs and symptoms of sexual abuse are :
Unusual sexual behaviour
Torn, stained or bloody under ware
Difficulty in sitting or walking
Unexpected or unexplained changes of behaviour or demeanour
Becoming withdrawn or isolated
Emotional/Psychological Abuse - Definition
Psychological abuse also refered to as emotional abuse is characterised by a person subjecting or exposing another to a behaviour that may result in psychological trauma.
This kind of abuse is often seen in situations of power imbalance.
Examples of this are:
Verbal abuse.
Humiliation or ridicule.
Threats of punishment, abandonment and or exclusion from activities.
Deliberate denial of religious or cultural beliefs.
Failure to provide access to appropriate social skills and educational development training.
