The main advantage of having history on film is that movies are much more stimulating mentally. Students are likely to succeed more during their educational experience if things are on film. On the one hand, students are probably likely recall more factual information when they read text and watch a movie than they do when we read the text alone. But because we seem to remember events that happen in a video or movie more so than on text, when the information in the movie conflicts with the historical facts in the text, students are more likely to remember the film version, regardless of whether it's correct.
Watching historical films can help extend the learning beyond the textbook. Sometimes a movie can really help students get a feel for an era or an event. Films help contextualize the way people of the time dressed, spoke, acted, and also showed any form of racism. It turns out that such historical inaccuracies, once formed, are tough to shake: I personally held on to the movie misinformation and historical inaccuracies even when told beforehand that the film clips I was about to see were fictional. I felt that it was a little harder to fully retain historical misinformation, though, when my teachers were more specific about the inaccuracies they would show, saying, for instance, that "the film presented it this way but it really happened like this..."
