Discontinuous Narrative in Atwood's A Handmaid's Tale
Sections V & VI comprise five chapters, 13 – 17. As is the case pretty much throughout the novel, the narrative is quite discontinuous (one could also say the narrative is non-linear), with present scenes interspersed with numerous flashbacks.
Section V (which consists of only Chapter 13) is a very good example of discontinuity in narrative as is seen throughout much of the book, because it contains many different short scenes where Offred is either being quite reflective (e.g. the passage where she speaks about boredom being erotic), flashbacks (such as the one where she and her daughter are caught while escaping) as well as scenes in the present (when she is seeing her own perception of her body change) The main purpose of the flashbacks is to flesh out the story, that is to say, provide background information and show us past events, so that the whole story makes sense and means more to us. However, each flashback also shows that she is not afraid to tell the story of her pre-Revolution life – she refuses to forget her past, or to reconcile her present.
The pace and style of narration changes constantly during this chapter, and it depends primarily on the subject of narration. For example, when she recounts her and her daughter’s capture (while they are trying to leave Gilead), the sentences are highly fragmented with heavy use of commas. This has the effect of making the paragraph seem to go faster. Thus, Atwood communicates to us the pace of the action occurring, as well as the speed at which thoughts and fears are running through Offred’s mind as she runs herself.
A different tempo of narrative can be seen in the paragraph where she remembers looking paintings of fat nude women. Here, there is quite heavy use of punctuation such as commas and semicolons, but they are not used to increase the pace of the narrative. The effect here is to emphasise the rich detail and description – this is done by Atwood to give us the sense that Offred is trying so

    She is also sacrificing her rights and privileges because women in the Gilead society are not allowed to work, pick who they want to marry, or speak up for themselves. Offred has also been suffering in which she is constantly thinking about her lost daughter, not knowing if she is alive or not. To worsen her suffering, Serena decides to give her hope by showing a picture of her daughter to her knowing that she will not be able to find her or do anything about it.     Imagery is an important literary device which, when used well, can enable an author to convey powerful and persuasive themes. Imagery can also be used to convey the mood of a book in ways that straightforward, factual descriptions never could. Jewett's use of imagery is incredibly effective. She uses imagery to convey Sylvia's surroundings and emotions to the reader. The following passage is a good example of how Jewett uses imagery: "Sylvia's face was like a pale star, if one had seen it from the ground, when the last thorny bough was past, and she stood trembling and tired...(Line 55-57)." These lengthy and intricate sentences are filled with detail. This allows the reader to create a very detailed image in his/her mind of what is occurring in the excerpt. Nevertheless, Jewett still uses many short telegraphic sentences to focus the reader's attention to what is happening at that moment.     The most immediately obvious technique is discovered straight away when the reader turns to the contents page. The novel is set out in the form of a diary or journal, instantly a sense of empathy will be created, as Offred, the main character, is communicating directly with the reader, "I", or "We" are the terms of reference used throughout the novel, as Offred narrates, and this enhances the personal feeling. The opening sentence of the first chapter is startlingly bleak, "We slept in what had once been the gymnasium." From this the reader can instantly surmise that something is amiss, and thenceforth views the dystopian world of Gilead through Atwood's intensely vivid descriptive prose, which is another technique that is used to great effect throughout the novel. Atwood describes Gilead through almost every sensory medium, in minute detail. Staying with the description of the gymnasium that the handmaidens sleep in; "The pungent scent of sweat, shot through with the sweet taint of chewing gum and perfume from the watching girls.", and "...a palimpsest of unheard sound, style upon style....a revolving ball of mirrors, powdering the dancers with a snow of light."
