The 1964 Civil Rights Act outlawed discrimination based on color, sex, gender, religion or nationality (Barnes & Bowels, 2014). It also banned discrimination with voter registration. It also outlawed racial segregation in schools, workplace, and public accommodations. The original civil right act was developed in 1875, ("National Archives and Records Administration") Only to be overturned by the supreme court in years to come. 1964 for the act was put into place to ensure that ALL people would be protected from discrimination, especially when traveling through various states, federal law supersedes state law.
The Voters Right Act of 1965 was put in
place to ensure that discrimination became a thing of the past (Barnes & Bowels, 2014). At this point, voting rights had been expanded to all women and African American men, but southern democratic states had individual policies in place that would prevent some from fulfilling their right to vote. Some of these policies were poll taxes, literacy test. Poll taxes are fees that were charged to black voters; this was done to stop black voters from voting because many of them were poor. The Literacy test was put in place for black southerners, they would be asked question about the constitution or government("National Archives and Records Administration"), this method was used to stop black voters who did not have a good education from voting. In 1965 President Johnson signed the Voters Right Act (Barnes & Bowels, 2014). This act would allow the Federal government to monitor all changes made to voting policies, and require federal approval for any changes to take place. This law would also make the use of the Literacy Test illegal. The Voters Right Act of 1965 made it extremely clear the-the federal government would no long tolerate decimation against anyone, and everyone had a right to vote without discrimination.
