The distinctive eye shine given off by many animals comes from the tapetum lucidum, a mirror-like layer of cells in or behind the retina. The retina captures some of the light that enters the eye, but some passes through. The tapetum lucidum bounces it back at the retina, giving the animal a second chance to see it. It's this ricocheting light that gives off the vaguely eerie glow we have come to associate with scary tales. You see, not all light is absorbed by visual pigments in the retina; some of it passes through. By increasing or rather, by bouncing the light that comes into their eyes, these animals effectively increase the amount of light available for their eyes to see with, and increase their ability to see in what we perceive as darkness.
Human eyes do reflect light, as all flash photographers know. Our eyes look red in some photographs. But it's not a reflector. It's the camera flash bouncing off the red blood vessels and red tissue in the back of our eye. It occurs when using a photographic flash very close to the camera lens, in ambient low light. Red-eye effect appears in the eyes of humans and animals that have no tapetum lucidum. The red-eye effect is due to the color of the fundus, which is due to melanin, a pigment, principally located in the retinal pigment epithelium. Because the light of the flash occurs too fast for the pupil to close, much of the very bright light from the flash passes into the eye through the pupil, reflects off the fundus at the back of the eyeball, and out through the pupil. The camera records this reflected light.

Before actually beginning the dissection of the cow’s eye, we were about to sketch a fairly relative picture of our observing’s of the exterior body of the eye. The eye, having almost completely being sheltered in fat and muscle, was quite firm and only the cornea and optic nerve was identified. By further cutting down the fat, we were able to spot a rather tough pinkie white outer covering of the eyeball, which we later discovered to be known as the sclera. We also noticed the blue covering over the front of the eye, known as the cornea, which became cloudy after death. Finally beginning the dissection, we made an incision in between the sclera and cornea which took much effort as it was quite tough. However once slit, a clear liquid named the aqueous humour was able to ooze out. Dissecting further, we were able to remove the lens, the iris and the pupil. The iris, suspended between the cornea and lens, came out as a rather brown coloured circle. The pupil, distinguished as the dark circle in the centre of the iris was rather quite oval. The lens was a tiny blob of white which resembled an ice capsule but however had a rather pasty soft, smooth and easily damaged texture. When splitting the eye in half, we were able to discover its rather liquid-filled chamber in which a black, jelly-like substance called the vitreous humour seeped out. Deep near the end of the inner eye with all the vitreous humour removed, was the retina. Shaped like a bowl, the light blue retina contained red blood vessels which are assumed to receive the oxygen transmitted from the blood. The eye was quite warm, considering its defrosting methods and emitted little odour which in turn suggest that its rotting stage hasn’t yet begun.…

When light enters the eye it first enters through your cornea, the transparent protective coating over your eye. Next it will pass through the pupil which is the small opening in the middle of your iris, or colored part of your eye. The muscles in the iris help to protect the eye by expanding and contacting based on the brightness of the light in your environment helping you see much clearer in bright and dim light. In side the pupil the light will then move through the lens which focuses the light and displays and image onto the retina, the light-sensitive inner lining of the back of the eyeball. The lens is what enables us to focus on images up close, middle range, and far away. Normally the lens is focused on middle range objects, but when you would want to see something far away or up close the muscles around the lens help with that. To focus on something far away the muscles work to flatten the lens and then to focus on something up close the muscles contract to make the lens as round as possible. On the retina directly behind the lens there is a depressed spot called the fovea. This is the center of your visual field and this is where images are in the most focus. There is also another spot on your retina in which you see nothing this is called your blind spot. On your retina are these receptor cells responsible for vision and they are your rods and cones. The rods respond to varying degrees of light and dark, but not to colors, mostly provide your night vision. The cones allow us to see color as well as light and dark, but they primarily operate in daytime as they are less sensitive to light than the rods are. Inside the fovea is the most concentrated amount of cones with no rods explaining how this is the best focus part of your retina. Right outside the fovea is where the most rods are located with few cones and as you continue to the edges of the retina there are few rods and barely any cones.
