Research and Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing In this discussion board I will discuss research and evidence-based practice in nursing. I will give examples of each, as well as a research and clinical question pertaining to nursing. Research and evidence-based practice are important for nurses because they help to find the most safe and effective way to care for patients. Research in nursing is used to aid in answering a nursing related issue (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2014). Nursing research is important because it gives evidence to why or why not a clinical practice is important. An example of nursing research would be nursing interventions to decrease urinary tract infections from foley catheters. Evidence-based practice in nursing,
answers a nursing related question by gathering appropriate research from reputable sources, critiquing its relevance to the clinical question, then incorporating the change into clinical practice and evaluating its effectiveness (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2014). The main purpose of evidence-based practice, is to find the safest treatment or care to patients through current and reputable research (Dickerson & Pope, 2015). An example of evidence-based practice is the utilization of compression stockings for surgical patients to decrease the likelihood of developing a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) (Schub & Smith, 2016). A research question identifies the issue that needs to be solved (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2014). A sample of a research question would be: What are ways to prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia? A clinical question looks at the population, intervention, comparison, and outcome (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2014). An example of a clinical question would be: In ventilator-dependent adult patients in a critical care department, does using a chlorohexidine mouth rinse every two hours for mouth care, decrease the incidences of ventilator associated pneumonia; compared to the patients that receive mouth care with a plain mouth rinse every two hours?
