Technology is the collection of tools, including machinery, modifications, arrangement and procedures used by humans. Technologies involve the manipulation of the environment to meet certain human needs such as food, shelter, communication, and health. The development of various technologies has been affected by and has affected the environment, human societies, and science. One piece of technology that has influenced humans significantly has been the computer. Through its historical significance and evolution, the computer has impacted politics, economies, social life, and the environment.
According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, “computer” is an electronic machine that can store and work with large amounts of information (Merriam Webster Dictionary, 2014). Fire used to be a necessity hundreds and thousands of years ago. Now, the computer is a necessity for us as we use it in our daily lives. We use the computer to communicate with people such as web conferencing with friends, look up information about a particular topic, socialize on social networks such as Facebook or even do something as simple as sending emails to friends and loved ones. The computer has also managed to change us from reading hard copies of books, magazines, and newspapers, to reading online newspapers articles and e-books.
In the workplace, paperwork is slowly converting from manual printing and keeping documents in files to storing documents in the computer. This has facilitated the use of paperwork in the sense that it takes up a lot of space and an office has limited space. Going digital according to Dennis Hopkins (Hopkins, 2010) will help the environment as there will be less demand for paper which would result is less trees being cut down.
Computers play an important role in politics. In developed countries like the United States of America, computers have been utilized in politics and they have greatly changed the
