The term disease is the condition of the living, which leads to a disorder of the mind or body, which therefore destroys good health. (S-Cool A-Level). Biology online states that disease is a ‘pathologic condition in which the normal functioning of an organism or body is impaired or disrupted, resulting in extreme pain, dysfunction, distress or death.’ (Biology Online)
Disease throughout History
Over the years, there has ‘been a gradual decline in mortality from all three of the main diseases.’ These diseases being, cancer, circulatory disease, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease. Cancer use to be the highest cause of death. ‘30% off all registered deaths’ were due to a person having been diagnosed with some sort …show more content…
The negative effects of disease
Possible causes of disease
There many different causes of disease, some of these are caused by micro-organisms including, bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.
Microorganisms are living organism that cannot be seen the unaided human eye. They are microscopic or submicroscopic. (Biology Online, 2016) Most of these microorganisms are unicellular creatures. These are what humans need to be able to digest the food they consume and to be making sure there is normal development in their immune system. There can also be disadvantages to these because microbes such as viruses. Bacteria etc can cause diseases if the individual’s immune system cannot fight these microbes off.
A variety of diseases can be caused by mutations that are inherited from the parents and are present in an individual at birth. Just like the sickle cell disease. Other types of diseases can be caused by acquired mutation in a gene or group of genes that will occur while a person is living. Acquired mutation occur in a person at some point during the time they are alive these are only present in certain cells in the body and are not present in all off …show more content…
A person’s diet can extremely effect diseases. If a person has diabetes it can lead to an increase risks with kidney disease, strokes, infections and heart disease. (World Health Organisation) Obesity can also be a problem, people are taking in too much fats and sugars which are causing problems such as heart disease or type 2 diabetes. All of these things link to unhealthy eating and can cause many problems and cause many diseases for a person if they are not keeping a healthy diet and exercising enough to keep themselves fit.
Importance of knowing what disease is
It is important to know what disease is so that these diseases can be treated. If people understand the causes and symptoms of the different diseases then they are going to be more aware and will be more likely to get checked out. Another reason why it is important is that if a person is treated for the disease then they will be healthier than before and this will then hopefully reduce the percentages off people that die from a disease.
It is also important to know what a disease is so that we can decide what is worth spending the health care resources on. If there are diseases that are more common that others then this means that there will be a high priority for the equpitment they need to cure these diseases whereas there might be a less common disease so therefore there would be a lower demand for the equpitment needed to cure this
