Specific Purpose: By the end of my speech, the audience will be able to identity 3 incidents that have happened, and the safety protocols the park took in response to these events.
Central Purpose: Three of the incidents at Disneyland have prompted greater safety within the parks.
INTRO
As of December 2006, 13 guests and one employee have died inside of Disneyland’s different parks . Although we all associate the “happiest place on earth,” where “dreams do come true” with good, wholesome, family entertainment in a safe place that’s far away from death, pain and injury, incidents do happen at Disneyland. On Christmas Eve of 1998. Luan Phi Dawson, who was 33, and his wife, Lieu Thuy Vuong, 43, were struck the heads by a detached metal cleat (Los Angeles Times, 1998)
C. In September of 2003, Marcelo Torres died, and several other guests were injured, when a locomotive separated from its train along a tunnel section of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (Los Angeles Times, 2003).
Signpost: Now that I’ve been over some of the accidents that have happened in the park, I’m going to talk about some of the changes they have caused.
II. After these events, Disneyland has tried to make the park as safe as possible to prevent any further injuries and fatalities.
A. The Columbia ship incident prompted a movement for greater government oversight of theme park operations and safety procedures (Los Angeles Times, 1998).
B. For years, Disneyland has altered many things that even the regulars of the park haven’t noticed (Woosley, 2015).
C. On April 14, 2014, three of Disneyland’s most popular rides were closed due to safety citations (Tully, S., & Elysse, J, 2014).
