Case 3: Disneyland Resort Paris: Mickey Goes to Europe

I believe that managers should adapt the resort to more local cultures for the 15th Anniversary in 2007. Even if Disney adapts to the local culture there is still going to be a sense of the American Disney World in the theme. Disney has expanded to countries all over the world yet they cannot change the fact that the characters are the same wherever they go. There is always going to be a Winnie the Pooh and Lion King and cultures all over the world view the American made movies. However; like mentioned in the case, I believe that even though very little of Disney’s core product needs adaptation, they must focus and change how they position and sell their product in each of the markets. To one market Mickey may mean something totally different to another. In order to be successful I believe that they do have to alter the way they do things from country to country and culture to culture.

If they do not adapt to the local culture they could see more financial instability like they did in the past and they may see less people coming to their parks in Paris. One of the mistakes mentioned in the case was about how Disney did not serve alcohol in the park when it first opened and how they had to change that to meet the needs of their consumers and even this minor mess-up was not forgotten by the locals and it took them a long time to get over it.

I think Disney could implement my suggestion by looking deeper into the cultures of the surrounding countries and the people who travel to the Paris park and research what they want and what would make their experience better. Also, look into their cultures and figure out how they like to do things. There are numerous countries and cultures that travel to Disneyland Paris and it is hard to get a grip on who the average consumer is and what they look like. This is where Disney really needs to meet the needs of numerous culture and

    First, Euro Disney’s poor performance due to the management lacked on understanding of the cultural difference between two nations.     The first recommended course of action for Disney is a revamping of its training and customer service standards. Currently, Euro Disney is having issues with high employment turnover due in part to the strictly enforced rules and requirements set by Disney, and the chaotic working conditions. Disney parks pride themselves on being an extremely friendly, clean, family oriented and magical place to visit. While the Japanese understood this for Tokyo Disney, mostly in part because it is an extension of their philosophy, the French are harder and could not grasp this concept. The French are individualists; they are more laid back and interested in being their own person, and not being a “carbon copy.” Plus they are not known for being friendly and open an integral value of a Disney employee. Disney needs to compromise on some of its values for the sake of its workers. They need to be more accommodating to the cultural demographic of the French. Additionally, I believe that if the French or European workers felt that the park was respectful towards their culture, they would be more inclined to work under less than what they consider to be ideal conditions.     One way that the ability to adapt to local cultures and tastes is the key factor in determining the success of a business in china is because it makes sure that the business has a product that the market wants to buy. Disneyland is one company who did not manage to initially adapt their product to the chinese market. Disney did not research the chinese market enough before entering the chinese market assuming that they would like the typical American image that they had.     Some factors that hurt EuroDisney was their misconception of what the French enjoy in a theme park. They took the same ideas, plans and layouts that worked for the US market and imported it to a different culture. Needless to say, the French people did not fancy the “Americanized” implantation in their culture and rejected the park. Many of the French Bankers did not like the idea or questioned the financial structure of the park.     Since opening in 1992, Euro Disney, or currently recognized as Disneyland Paris, has become one of the largest tourist attractions in all of Europe. Though touted as one, if not the happiest places on earth, financially it is not much but a mirage. Euro Disney has not turned a profit since 2008, and has already had to be bailed out on 3 other occasions over its 2 decade existence.     The venture into Hong Kong by Walt Disney was a simple example of a large successful western company not doing its homework. The case presents a clear picture of the importance of understanding a foreign market thoroughly before doing business there. Several factors led to an unsuccessful first year of operations and a majority of these factors could have been avoided with a better cultural understanding in the planning stages. One of the culture differences that was obvious to Disney was the fact that the children are not familiar with the Disney characters.
