Disparities In Prisons
Most of you might wonder why I would want to work in a prison and treat inmate’s teeth. Well oral disease is exceedingly high in the incarcerated population. By helping these inmates it gives me so much satisfaction, and at the end of the day I go home and I am able to get a good nights sleep knowing the gratitude I receive from helping these individuals.
Now that I have stated why I love my job and the satisfaction I receive I will tell you what my job involves. Basically it consists on doing x-rays, fabricating dentures, doing fillings , pulling teeth and going over oral hygiene instructions, to pedophiles, rapists, murderers, thieves, and drug dealers. In fact in 2014 alone the Dental Staff conducted 16,647 procedures in 16 of the correctional

On August 8th, 2013 United States Attorney General Eric Holder made history when he announced the nearing end of the mandatory minimum-era in federal sentencing policy in his speech to the American Bar Association in San Francisco. In his address Holder lamented the condition of the Federal Justice System, expressing concern over astronomical incarceration rates, lack of inmate rehabilitation, and discouraging recidivism rates. The penitentiary rivalry has cause a lot of changes within our American prison system. The rivalry implemented design changes every so often which led to better prison population and control of the inmates within them, because every state wanted the best prison system. A few of the changes that came from these rivalries were how they built the inmate cells, they built them so that the inmates or criminals inside them could not see the other inmates or have contact with them. They also allowed inmates to eat with each other rather than separate but this had to be done in complete silence. This rivalry made different types of prisons come about, rather than put all offenders together regardless of crimes committed they…

The purpose of the artwork is to show that African American men and women are overrepresented in the prison population. The piece represents the silencing of the incarcerated men, who were stripped of many rights. The Artist uses tar to symbolize the silencing of these individuals. Titus Kaphar also wants to shed light on the fact that so many African American children have fathers in the penitentiary system. He personally experienced not being able to find his father because the prison systems are overflowing with black men. Any of those men could be his father and he wanted to express to his audience the injustices of the penitentiary.…

I totally agree with your post. I believe when we look at the disparity of inmates in prison show us the real fact of our correctional system. In term of racism is this country, it has gradually decreased and in the current society people are segregated by class and that fact will never change no matter how many time we debate about that topic. Because if we look at other countries, where there is no racial discrimination exists, there is a bias towards the rich and the poor, but apparently will never change, because it is the divide line in every…

The standard that courts must use to decide if segregation is unconstitutional is if it violates our eighth amendment. Courts have found that inmates placed in solitary have the right to adequate personal hygiene, exercise, mattresses, ventilation, and rules specifying how they can earn their release. I don’t think that segregating inmates within a prison based upon their ethnic background or race is a good idea because that’s just a form of discrimination. Just because someone may be a different color than the rest does not mean that they should instantly be separated. With that said, we should not use different prisons for different ethnic groups or races to avoid cultural or racial violence. We’ve come a long way from the 60’s and we should…

Prisons systems have changed after the first penitentiary was opened known as the Eastern Penitentiary. The theory of penitentiary was that by keeping criminals locked in their cell with not outside influences so that they can reflect on their past as well as become more religious is a way that the person will change their lives for the better and in return this would reform the person so upon release they were God fearing people that could function in society. These prisoners were locked in their cell 23 hours a day and had 30 minutes twice a day for yard time that was no just outside their cell. The inmates worked along in their cell, doing what they were told to do. They ate in their cell and only were allowed to have two books and one being that of the bible. Auburn was the first penitentiary to put this method into action. (Foster, 2006)…

The criminal justice system in America is what helps to keep the population safe from harm, but it seems to be driven by racial biases. With over 2.2 billion people behind bars, mass incarceration is an issues facing the correctional system in America (Smith, 2015). These individuals have been sentenced to non-violent drug crimes and are mostly people of color. It is estimated that the likelihood of a black felon being sentenced to prison is 26 percent higher than that white individual found guilty of a felony (Sutton, 2013). Sentencing disparities in America are a fundamental issue in the criminal justice system. It is a real problem that affects the black population. Racial threat theory and social disorganization theory can be used to help…
