The Richmond Police Department uses social media outlets to keep the community informed, as well as letting the community be able to communicate with the police department. They do this by having appointed personnel for the police force to do mandatory checks to respond to those who leave comments. Those personnel are also required to remove any comments that do not address certain criteria that pertain to law enforcement questions or concerns about the community. There is a policy that indicated that only authorized personnel are able to access the use of the departments social media page. This does not come lightly, because those who do have access to the social media page must as well abide by those same policies that are indicated to other police officers of the department. As stated before in this paper there is a time and a place to use social media, there should be no personal use of social media activity when a police officer is on duty, this does not regulate to off-duty police officers. The use of a personal account of social media should be done when the officer is out of all police uniforms, and or equipment that was issued to them.
