17 June 2010 Miscommunication in Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants.” The story “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway is described through the conversations of a couple which proves the miscommunication and lack of understanding between the couple. In my paper I am going to show how the relationship between the American and the girl failed to be a good relationship due to this lack of communication and understanding.
The American and the girl were waited for the Madrid train in a station bar. Both are talking about a serious problem which is the main reason to make their cheerful life monotonous. Gradually it is revealed that the young girl is pregnant and the American is trying to convince her to have an abortion.
The American and the girl Jig are not married and their relationship seems superficial. The girl asked the man which drink they should drink while sitting at a table in the shade. However, the man replied that the day is pretty hot and “Let’s drink beer.” It seems that they have lack of communication as well as lack of depth in their relationship. Otherwise, the man should reply what the girl wants to listen.
The American could not understand the girl’s point of view as well. The imagination about the line of hills of the girl is the hills are looking like white elephants. On the contrary, the man could not try to find out the meaning of the girl’s imagination. He immediately answered that he never seen white elephant. It proves that the American does not want to realize as well as to appreciate the girl’s point of view.
In addition, the American also could not try to understand the feelings of the girl as she got pregnant accidently. They had no good understanding with each other. When they were trying another drink the American told Jig how the system of abortion is very simple and there is no point to worry and it is a natural process. He added that he will go and

In Ernest Hemingway’s short story “Hills Like White Elephants,” Hemingway surprisingly engages the reader with ambiguous dialogue and character detail necessitating use of extensive symbolism within the setting to encourage the readers active participation. The glaring lack of key details concerning the characters, an American man and a girl named Jig, and their disjointed conversation provide little real substance to comprehend the conflict at hand. In trying to determine what operation is being discussed this statement provides little clue, “I know you wouldn’t mind it, Jig. It’s really not anything. It’s just to let the air in” (Hemingway 592). If anything this ambiguous statement promotes further confusion. So it is necessary for the reader…

The setting is in the 1920’s at a train station. The man, the American, and the young girl, Jig, have a discussion about a sore topic. Both talk, but neither listens or understands the other’s point of view. Like any eavesdropper, tuning in to another’s conversation, the reader is left to discern the topic merely by listening. The American man will say anything to convince his girlfriend to have the operation. He tells her he loves her and that everything between them will go back to the way it used to be.”That’s the only thing that bothers us. It’s the only thing that’s made us unhappy” (page 2). Revealing the selfishness of the American, and revealing Jig’s uncertainty. Her statements referring to the hills looking…

They are introduced as “the American” and “the girl.” They are on a train station, which is a stopping point between Barcelona and Madrid. This is where travelers make the decision which direction to go, which parallels how the main characters have to make the decision on having an abortion or having a baby. Divergent is a provocative novel that is my current treasured read. This dystopian, Sci-fi novel written by Veronica Roth is an exclusive novel that captivates readers instantaneously. This novel begins with Tris Prior, an Abnegation born child, thinking about the choice that will change her life just days away from the choosing ceremony. Tris Prior is a short, blond girl that is impulsive yet kind. In fact, she is intelligent in her own manner. Tris has a tendency to think through situations extremely well (this skill is very useful in the world she lives in). The world Tris Prior lives in is separated into 5 different factions. Each faction is based on who you are as a person. The Dauntless are known to be the brave, the Abnegation are…
