Personal Response:
This story follows 16 year old Beatrice (Tris) who lives with her family is a dystopian version of Chicago. Society has been divided into five factions, each faction is meant to uphold a quality of humanity. The five factions are Abnegation (The selfless), Amity (the peaceful), Candor (the honest), Dauntless (The fearless) and Erudite (The intelligent). When they are 16 the young adults must take a test to find out what faction they are suited to, then choose whether to stay in their current faction with their family or to transfer to a new faction. There are many themes in Divergent, two of the most outstanding are choice and fear.
The first theme that this book revolves around is choice “One choice decides you friends. One choice decides your beliefs. One choice determines your loyalties-Forever. One choice can transform you”. Beatrice’s test results say that she is suited for three out of the five factions, Abnegation, Dauntless or Erudite, this is called being Divergent. She easily rules out Erudite “I know I will not choose Erudite…I am like my father”. Beatrice was born into a Abnegation family and has lived as a selfless person her whole life, but putting others first is not how she wants to live the rest of her life, however if she chooses another faction she must leave her family “When I look at the Abnegation lifestyle as an outsider, I think it’s beautiful… It’s only when I try to live it myself that I have trouble. It never feels genuine. But choosing another faction means forsaking my family. Permanently”. The other faction that she is considering joining is Dauntless “It will take a great act of courage to choose Dauntless”. When she goes to the ceremony to choose her future lifestyle she surprises everyone, even herself by choosing Dauntless. In Roth’s world young adults who are still developing are forced to decide how they want to live the rest
