Veronica Roth’s novel Divergent is not necessarily one that I would have chosen to read on my own, at first it was hard to get into the plot itself. However about a hundred pages into the book I found myself interested in the plot of the story. Divergent is a book with truly many themes such as fear, family, society and class, and power. But to me the main theme is choice.
The main character’s name is Beatrice Prior, who later changed her name to Tris. The entire premise of the book was that you just have to choose between you family’s faction or choose to leave your family and everything that you’ve ever known to join another. Additionally each individual has to take a test that assesses your skill level and tells you which faction you are best suited for. Tris was judged as a divergent because during her exam she showed a lot of signs of being compatible with three different factions. Those three factions were:
The Erudite Faction - known for their intelligence
The Dauntless faction - known for their bravery
The Abnegation faction - known for their selflessness
Most other people would have to choose between only two factions but thats why tris so different. Not very many divergents, and to a lot of people thats very dangerous to the way of the factions. Being a divergent means that you’re different. It means that you are compatible with many different factions.
Divergents threaten factions because they have a lot of choice. The factions were designed so that you could keep peace and that there would be no war.
