The word choice, sentence structure, figurative language, and sentence arrangement the author {Kimberly Brubaker Bradley} uses, makes the text journalistic or informal like. When the characters talk, they don't speak formally or with really bad grammar. They talk like normal people would do. Kimberly writes with little figurative language. When she does though, it is relatable to the text, and easy for younger readers to understand.…

I walked outside and it was hot vs. I took a leap outside into the sun that blazed down on me it felt like I was wearing millions of winter coats. Which one help you visualize which is happening better? The book I'm reading which is "Uglies" by Scott Westerfeld used a lot of figurative language throughout this story. For an example on page 238 it states, "it just felt flat, like a song she'd heard to many time." By using a simile it helped me understand what she meant by flat. If that simile wasn't there I could of though it meant deflated or flat like a pancake. To add on, using figurative language makes the book more clear and it allows the book to continue with a flow. As you can see, the book I chose to read "Uglies" contains figurative…

In Into Thin Air by Jon Krakaeur, the author’s word choice of descriptive passages and vivid words help well understand his perspective. You see this whole story is written in perspective Jon Krakauer is a journalist by trade, and his motive for going on the Everest expedition is to write an article about the experience of climbing as part of a commercial expedition. The perspective is in the first person, but with a journalistic viewpoint. Krakauer often seems removed from the subject, describing events as objectively as possible, as one would expect in a journalistic article. For example, he is sometimes critical of his fellow climbers, even though elsewhere he describes…

Yes, I agree that figurative language improves the understanding of the novel in Woods Runner. I reached that conclusion because the picture the words paint gives you an idea of what is happening throughout the novel. Firstly, an example of this is found in chapter 4 on page 27 where it says “Samuel smelled it before he saw anything. Not just the smoke from the fires. But the thick, heavy smell. Blood. Death.” and this adds to the way the reader would paint a picture of the story in his head. Next, another example is where it says “He had seen no fresh sign until he came halfway up the fifth ridge, a thickly forested round hump shaped like the back of a giant animal.”(Paulsen, 19) giving…

The government in Equality’s world is very controlling but also fragile. When Equality brings his invention to the house of the scholars, they reel back in fear but then also anger. This is because they can demand a lot of anything but if something happens and someone discovers a secret, the government can be overthrown with a lot of support. This type of discovery is what they fear most. The government is so afraid of any variation that they choose who goes together for unmentionable purposes. This just shows that any slight difference in the system can bring the entirety of Equality’s government. The government in Divergent is not as controlling as the one Equality has come to know and to grow up with. This is because they only suggest what faction one should go into but the individual ultimately has the choice to go into whatever faction they please. This shows it's weakness of letting individuality exist when they want everyone the same or really close to the same. They let people mingle and interact with one another some of the time though not outside of the faction. This is how they are giving people freedom and personalities rather than nothing at…

Which means you are homeless, you live on the street. If you’re lucky you'll be fed by Abnegation, they have the worst jobs of the city and people are scared of them. Just because you do not fit into a faction does not mean you should be kicked out and forced to live on the streets, this is another example of why a dystopia is wrong. As you join your new or continuing faction, you can be killed very easily. As Beatrice joined Dauntless they were threatened to be killed if they were at the bottom of the skills scoreboard, and if they challenged a leader. In the city divergents are seen as dangerous, because they can not be controlled. Each faction controls their citizens by a certain injected serum, and divergents are not affected by it. If you are divergent after your aptitude test, you are told never to tell anyone and to go with your parents faction. Being divergent is seen as dangerous and not fitting in as seen as a bad thing, everyone is in their own faction and when someone does not fit in they killed for it and that is…

The same group that took the tests the day before are all brought to an event conveniently named the Choosing Ceremony where the children become initiates for the faction they each choose. Those whom believed that dishonesty was the worst virtue, created Candor where no one ever lied or told a mistruth. The next is a faction named Amity, who had thought aggression and violence to bring us to our downfall, now made rules to never hurt another and valued peace and harmony. Abnegation, the faction that thought selfishness to be the worst virtue, for that they live their entire lives caring for others. Erudite manifesto says that “Lack of understanding leads to a disconnect among people with differences… in order to eliminate conflict, we must eliminate the disconnect… by correcting the lack of understanding.” (Erudite manifesto- 43). “Intelligence is a gift, not a right. It must be wielded not as a weapon but as a tool for the betterment of others.” (-Erudite manifesto-46). freedom from the fear that causes failure to act in the mist of danger, that is what the next faction Dauntless fought for. They fought to deny fear the power to influence their…

“There’s been a Death in the Opposite House” by Emily Dickinson observes a man witnessing an occurrence of death, and the aftermath of it. This poem is essentially about a man watching over the death of his neighbor across the street from him and watching the regular group of townspeople coming in and out of his house . It seems as if he has seen this even more than once in his life and is very intuitive about death. The readers start to see a relationship between death and the speaker and the figurative language helps to personify death and the houses it occurs in. Dickinson writes “ I know it by the numb look such houses have - always -” (Lines 2-4). The personification of death creates a sense of familiarity with the speaker and even more…

The authors use extended metaphors as a method to give life and meaning to their respective poems. “I jumped into the world. No parachute. Bootless, Falling into enemy territory.”. The narrator's birth is being compared to a paratrooper's suicide mission into enemy territory. The extended metaphor is used throughout the poem to emphasize the danger that lies ahead at birth. Just as a paratrooper faces the unknown when he launches out, the narrator experiences the same thing as he looks toward his future.…

In the movie Divergent, they can pick between five factions: Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Erudite, or Dauntless. They are put under a stim to see how they react and will give them a test result of which faction is right for them. If your test results come back inconclusive, it means you are divergent. The government kills divergents because they are a threat to their perfect society they are trying to make. They are then called to a gathering where they call your name, you make a small cut on your hand, and squeeze a drop of blood over the bowl of which faction you wish to choose. It also doesn’t have to be the faction your parents are apart of. Tris chooses dauntless, which they train her to fight, shoot, and conquer fear. In the novel 1984, there are three Ministries you can choose from. The Ministry of Love, Peace, and Truth. The people also don’t have to choose the same one as your parents, but are required to work at one of them. These ministries aren’t like the factions in Divergent. The factions are more manual labor and hard work, whereas the ministries are working in a desk and on computers or changing words in books. This is just one example of the power and control the government has over the…
