Hartle discussed how civility links to diversity and individuality. Civility requires free speech which is the only way we can communicate with one another. According to Aristotle the common good is justice and we all want justice. This common good causes like mindedness where everyone is of the same judgement. But if there is no common good then each individual is allowed to pursue their own good. Dr. Hartle also states that “…the greatest thing in the world is to belong to oneself”. I completely agree with her because I am a big person on self-love. In my opinion it makes life a lot easier when you get to know yourself very well to become your best self. A question was left to ponder for a bit: can laws bind people together into a community? The desire to live in a community that is governed by law. Social bonds are the truth. If social bond fail us then we no longer have a hold on each other. We no longer have a way of communication with each other. I learned in sociology that social bonds are key to socialization. Social bonds are what bring people together and helps establish relationships in society. With civil society it is required to have a shared belief, this can come through the social bonds. It is seen as uncivil to judge someone else on how what they think, feel, etc. To tolerate someone is just as bad. Tolerating someone is to judge their action as wrong but decide to put up with it. Civility demands respect for others as well as respect for yourself. But not all judgment is negative. A person’s judgment is a person’s individuality.
