Proud in the way that we are not ashamed to say that we are from the United States and that we can take pride in what the achievements that we make. Many people had made achievements in the worlds of art, literature, and science. Thomas Cole came to the United States in 1819 and later became famous for his beautiful paintings of American landscapes. A poet at the time had described Cole's paintings as “scenes of the wild grandeur peculiar to our country.” This means that his incredible paintings were foreign to the United States and his paintings were very unique and that . In the field of literature, Washington Irving published the first American sketchbook. His drawings included “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Female writers also had become very popular, such as Margaret Fuller or Catharine Sedgwick, who wrote serials for magazines and newspapers or some women had written best-selling novels. Edgar Allan Poe may have been the most whimsical author in the 1800’s in America. His poetry and short stories reflected deeply troubled lives, containing abused drugs and worrying constantly about money. The Americans still seemed to enjoy his work. As far as scientific advances go, people had taught themselves astronomy, developed ways to predict winds and ocean tides and monitor weather predictions, and developed a way of using ether as an anesthetic during surgery. At this time, people would not be ashamed of where they live because they are developing ways that are not coming off the ideas from the British and coming up with their own customs to live by.
