They say honesty is the best policy. But when it comes to Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy, are we being dishonest with our children or just telling those stories. In the essays, “Santa Claus Isn’t Coming to Town” written by Allison and “Truth and the Santa Claus Moment,” written by Corey Harbaugh, the writers discuss the values of honesty and the moments we choose to believe in.…

Hey Virginia, there is more than just a Santa Claus. Nowadays, Americans have either forgotten or ignored Christmas traditions put in place over 1500 years ago. They would rather indulge in the gifts and shopping to please their family than sit back and enjoy the holiday. This new mindset has led Christmas, Hanukkah, and other seasonal festivals to lose their religious intent through the past centuries by the hands of both people and markets. The original purpose of Christmas, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, has been trampled and overshadowed by a marketeer’s interpretation of how to represent the holiday. Santa and snowmen have become the faces of Christmas, instead of the Son…

    Teaching Civil Liberties

A battle began in November 2005 over the issue of properly labeling the holiday season to ensure that no one had civil liberties trampled on. Issues that many previously took for granted, such as the naming of a tree or labeling greeting cards, as either Christmas or simply holiday, became the central focus of this debate. The battles escalated until seemingly at stake were the Christian traditions that arguably established this nation. The battle lines seemed foggy and often overlapped as the nightly news and local and national politicians hastened to answer the clarion call of duty. The turmoil dragged Americans of all stripes in; most seemed offended, others defensive, all vocal. A card stating “Happy Holidays” that at one time seemed to convey a Christmas message became an ambiguous if not outright anti-Christian statement. Consumers blacklisted retailers who refused to leave the “Christ” in Christmas. Some business owners, adhering more to the almighty dollar than to any religious belief, flip-flopped to avoid damaging the brisk holiday sales. Even the American Civil Liberties Union held the stance of…

    Evolution Of Christmas

Winston Churchill once said, “Christmas is a season not only of rejoicing but of reflection.” As the big day draws near, it is important to reflect on the roots of the global holiday as well as the direction in which it is heading. Christmas is a tradition rooted deep in the history of western society. It has undergone many changes since it’s earliest celebrations. Even today, the holiday is constantly changing. Each year brings new innovations to Christmas. In the dawn of the holiday, it was minor and focused on the birth of Jesus, the light of the world. In the 19th century, Christmas was a time of family and goodwill to mankind. Today, though there still remains aspects of religion and selflessness, more than ever it has become a holiday consumed by commercialism. It is a development that is not likely to go way any time soon.…

I had just gotten home from school and I was carrying a small bag of presents my two closest friends gifted me. That day started off better than any of my other birthday’s by said friends decorating my locker as a surprise. I remember stepping into the living room and instantly facing a 180 mood swing. I was having that feeling you get when you’re excited to eat leftovers of your favorite food, but then quickly remember the food was never there. Meanwhile, my Mom was feeling a typical case of motherly nosiness and asked what was inside the bag.…

Each year, Christmas rolls around and everyone is on their best behavior and all the Christmas chaos begins. There is shopping needing to be done, food to be cooked, presents to be wrapped, and trips to the mall for a not-so-original picture with Santa and his elves. Despite the hectic nature of the season how can anyone not like the hustle and bustle of Christmas? In A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge defiantly loathes everything about Christmas. Scrooge would rather just work away at his business and say, “Bah! Humbug,” at anyone who mentions anything about Christmas. At least until Scrooge was visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future. Scrooge started off having a strong hatred towards Christmas, but as the story progresses and he is visited by the Christmas Ghosts he has a change of heart.…

We put up our Christmas trees and decorate them with lights that remain plugged in for weeks. You get the point: It is difficult to celebrate the holidays and keep up our usual sustainable habits. While it may seem that way, it is not impossible.…

Holidays have always been known to affect our consumer culture for many years, but how it all began eludes many people and very few studies have been completed on it. Even though some say that the subject is too broad to precisely to identify how holidays, especially Christmas, directly affect our market, I have found that people’s values, expectations and rituals related to holidays can cause an excessive amount of spending among our society. Most people are unaware that over the centuries holidays have become such a profitable time of year for industries that they now starting to promote gift ideas on an average of a month and a half ahead of actual holiday dates to meet consumer demands.…

On June 22, 2013, I woke up as if it were any other day, but it was not any other day, it was my birthday. I got up and took a shower, brushed my teeth and hair and dressed in a nice, but casual outfit. A pair of blue, white, and red plaid shorts with a solid red polo shirt and white under shirt was my outfit of choice. I was excited for my party even though I knew what I was getting as a gift. All I had asked for was an Xbox 360. I knew my mother and the rest of my family had done everything they could to make sure I got it. I was so happy for a lot of things though. I was getting an Xbox, my older brother, Zach was coming, and it was a cook out. Even though the party was small, it was the best party ever. My whole family would be coming to the party my mom had planned.…
