Many people use social networking sites and they are becoming more popular by the hour; this is causing problems as many people believe that this causes anti-social behaviour. Many people believe that all teenagers are anti-social but only some teens are anti-social there are many reasons for this and I want to get to the heart of one reason. This reason is Social Networking sites and their influence on preteens and teenagers. One of the main reasons I am doing this project is because my mum does not want me to have a social networking account, I don’t know why this is and I believe my project will help me understand her reasoning. Using a variety of skills and sources, I wish to write a minimum of 1,000 words. I will also add up the internet and the impact of the internet on preteens and teenagers I believe this will help me come to my conclusion of my Extended Project question: Do social networking sites influence anti-social behaviour?

Among all 9 – 19 year olds in the UK: home access to the internet is growing with 75% of 9 – 19 year olds having access to the internet from a computer at home. 23% have never accessed the internet from home. 92% of 9 – 19 year olds have access to the internet at school.1
About 2 million 16-19 year olds spend around £600 pounds or more a year on internet buying sites such as eBay.2
By August 2011, 77% of households [in the UK] were connected, with 30 million going online every day or almost every day. 3
In 2009 23% of people were online with a phone…in 2011 it was 45% …by 2012 46% of Brits were online via a smartphone.4
Social networking sites create shorter attention spans which can cause sleeping problems which in turn can cause bad grades.5
Among those who got lower grades most checked Facebook at least once in a fifteen minute study period. Among those who had Facebook open on their computers during that study period, lower reading retention rates were observed. As summed up in a report by PC Mag, “Updating your Facebook status isn’t really going to help you ace that History test is it”6
Trolling for the unaware, means posting inflammatory or provocative remarks on a social network or forum to trigger an emotional response, deliberately provoking other users or readers into arguing back. It is a classic form of cyber-bullying that causes emotionally vulnerable children and teens a bit of grief.7
According to Nonprofit Tech, internet trolling has become so commonplace that users aware of the outbreak now go as far as to avoid viewing Facebook status updates, which, suggested the report, defeats the entire purpose of social networking altogether, and seriously calls into the question the benefits of the “status update”8
A new study warned that constantly looking at social media updates on smartphones, for instance, could create a worrisome ‘checking’ habit.9
Some people have quoted that the more you look at your Facebook it slows down reaction time and it stops your ability to see fast things.10
A study found that ”smartphone related habits are not yet perceived as problematic. Some consider it as an annoyance, but many positive experiences are mentioned as well.”11

My first question that I will ask myself is “Is The Internet Safe” well 46% of 46 people said yes the Internet is safe and 54% of 46 of my friends said no the Internet is not safe. My view on this is that the Internet is not safe as you hear in the news all the time about children that have been abducted by adults because they have not told their parents what they are doing and meet up with these people and get abducted the most recent case of this happened in January 2011 when a 29 year old man sexually groomed and abducted a 14year old girl. Jonathan Dowds from Londonderry, Northern Ireland, sexually groomed this 14 year old girl over Facebook and agreed to meet the girl in a London Park and then abducted her. The court found that Jonathan Dowds contacted the 14 year old girl over 100 text messages over a six week period, and sent countless messages via Facebook and other chat rooms, then they agreed to meet at a park and then slept together that night, but they were both fully clothed. This clearly states that everywhere you go you there is always some kind of danger on the internet. The best way to keep yourself protected online is to change your password often, and on Facebook is to again change your password frequently and to not accept friend request from anyone you don’t know.
