What effect do zoos really have on animals? Do zoos have a negative effect on the animals? When a animal is captured and brought to a zoo, does it negatively affect their behavior? With the first zoo being created in 1874 this has been an almost 150 year issue that has sparked controversy among many zoologists and common people as many say that the zoo is like a prison towards the animals as they are put into an enclosure for most of their lives. The UK has reported that in Cumbria (South Lakes Safari) Zoo more than 500 animals had died over a 2 year period and that the animals had looked more miserable as 48% of lions in the UK zoos’ had been seen pacing back and forth as a sign of behavior problems and has the public viewing zoos as not being “conservation aware” and causing more zoos across Europe and the US to get their licenses revoked. Although zoos act as a learning place for young children, the animals held in captivity result in changes of negative genetic disabilities from the small enclosures and low energy lives that the animals are forced to live in.
