Why Zoos Matter There are many things to consider regarding whether or not an animal will benefit from living in a zoo or nature park. The most important aspect to consider is an animal’s health and well-being. Of course there will be some differences when man tries to recreate nature, but ultimately, if these controlled environments prevent animals from going extinct in the wild, the benefits outweigh the negative effects. In the past, man has brutally hunted down animals without concern for their population. As technology has improved over the years, it became easier and easier to kill animals. Traps and guns so powerful that they could take down a lion became easily available to anybody who wishes to have one. But along with these advancements in weaponry came the realization of what had happened. Many species had been hunted to the point of extinction; there was no bringing them back. So, laws began appearing to prevent the extinction of other endangered species. Unfortunately, these laws had little effect. Furthermore, man is not the only predator within the animal kingdom. I would like to approach that with a different take. People will not be inspired to protect animals unless they see what they are protecting them from: famine, rejection from animal groups (which can ultimately lead to death), fear, and most importantly, extinction. Animals that live in zoos never have to be concerned with whether or not they will receive an adequate amount of food. They will never have to worry about being left by a pack (a majority of zoos do not usually keep a large quantity of one species of animal). And, they will not have to worry about going
