Students in today’s classroom are expected read and comprehend on a higher level than before. Because the CCSS focused in on preparing students for college and careers, the idea is that we should be teaching students how to read and process not only fiction text, but also a very large variety of informational text as well. The reading demands are extremely strenuous in high school and college, so students in both elementary and middle school need to be prepared for this much earlier. In preparing students to achieve, a teacher must first know what goals to set for students. They also should involve students in creating goals that match the standards and expectations. Educators must also realize that the sole job of literacy/English teachers to instruct students in literacy development but that the responsibility falls to all educators. The ability to read and comprehend informational texts in various subject areas in immensely important. Teachers can also support their students’ literacy development by keeping in mind not only the specific goals represented by that grade’s standards, but also the set of standards in the grades directly before and after. This allows teachers to remediate students who do not have the level of content knowledge that is expected and to also equip students with the skills necessary for success in the next grade. Another helpful tool in developing literacy skills in students is formative assessment. To support a student, a teacher must first know how much content knowledge the student has, as compared to the CCSS. The standards are also a way to narrow down the curriculum for each grade so that specific content is learned in each grade and educators can focus in on that content. If the range of expectations is too wide, then our goals become too large and unachievable. With the CCSS, goals and expectations for our students can be extremely targeted. Now students may from a focused curriculum that goes deep into the content rather than sampling a plethora of shallow content areas. The CCSS also allow for the states to be all on the same page in not only their expectations, but also in their curriculum. Our modern society is extremely mobile, meaning that we want our students in all parts of the country to be able to measure up to their peers because they are all receiving quality education with clear
