"Wags For Mags" was launched in 2012 to involve students with the service dog training process. The program focuses on getting Bradley student volunteers, fundraising, and dog training. Dr. Stacie Bertram, the faculty advisor for the group, states, “It's neat to see the dogs blossom in this environment, know they go on to serve families with disabilities and it's nice to have Bradley be a part of that.”
The students train the puppies in the basics. They are house trained, come, sit stay lie down are mastered and they become acclimated to multiple handlers. Once our dogs have matured enough, they go to their assigned trainers. This is the second half of the gift. The trainers are inmates in the Federal Correctional Institution. The trainers have the responsibility to teach each dog to fulfill a role as a support dog or guide dog based on the dog's size and skills. Chassy is a support dog. He opens doors, turns on and off lights, pulls a chair, is a patient base for mobility and much more.
