Dogberryism or malapropism is misuse of words for effect, it causes confusion among other characters which leads to misunderstandings.He also mistakes some words that people tell him which causes more misunderstanding. Dogberry is like the police in the play and because of his use of malapropism, it affects the way he solve crimes because no one would understand him. “One word, sir. Our watch, sir,have indeed comprehended two auspicious persons, and we would have them this morning examined before your worship.” (A3:S5:L43-46) In this quote Dogberry misused the word auspicious instead he should have just said “We caught two suspicious persons.” which was easier to understand. However Dogberry isn’t completely wrong with what he said, auspicious means success which has to do with the success of Don John deceiving Claudio and Don Pedro. In the quote Dogberry means the two people they caught are auspicious for the outcome of the play. In Act 3 Scene 5 Dogberry had the chance to stop the tragedy but because of the way he uses his words Leonato does not have the time to understand him.
