Kim Sherman’s Dogwalker is an intriguing, dark, tension building short film that denies the viewer happiness for the tradeoff of realism and a very strong protagonist. The film is not for the feign of heart or for anyone who enjoys the sensationalism of a romance film, but it will leave one remembering it and walking away with a message - life will beat you down. Oh yeah, there's also a dog!
Tension is at the heart of Dogwalker as there's minimal dialogue and a lot of good camera work to distinguish the tone of the movie through unreadable facial expressions and an overly friendly city that is sure to incite skepticism from viewers in terms of feeling the tension. This is how the film starts out without any spoilers. From there, the film takes one dark turn after another and gives this very strong protagonist one of, if not the most horrible day in her entire life. Dogwalker will unforgivingly strip viewers of their positivity and suspend all forms of hope. In most films, this could be a very and depressing thing, but since Dogwalker gets everything right from writing, all the way down to the camera angle on the subway, one can overlook the very grim narrative.
The trade - off for such a dark story is a bit of realism. Unlike most stories which adhere to the strict formula of a happy ending - Dogwalker pulls no punches, serving viewers a more practical flow of events that aren't meant to coddle anyone. This realist narrative strikes a chord with honesty and gives this film a sense of vulnerability for the protagonist. The viewers will connect and sympathize because she really doesn't deserve the narrative that has hold of her, but she trudges on forward
