Domestic violence is an issue facing men and women around the world in australia it is categorised in the Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act 2012. Unfortunately Statistics show that 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence at some point in their lives. Anyone can be effected but the age of the victim, race and gender impacts the statistical risk of domestic abuse but can affect anyone. Measures have been implemented to try and protect the most vulnerable from this threat but is it enough? Domestic violence can be hard to enforce if the victims don’t come forward or are in fear of their children's safety this creates many legal issues.

Domestic violence due to it’s nature being domestic is hard to prevent as lots of domestic abuse that is not physical abuse was not previously criminalised, in the new amendments to the act many no physical actions are now criminalised. Actions like intimidation and threats made in a domestic relationships was downgraded to name calling these and things like emotion abuse or restricting mobility and transport is now a crime. This legislation change will make positive results as it can be often hard to prove family violence by removing this act victims can speak freely about what happened without having to fear costs being made against them if they weren't able to prove their claims. This act when it was in use also had no evidence that it was “effective in preventing the making of false allegations of family violence”. The court still has the power to issue costs against a person if they make false allegations but is not mandatory now and is at the discretion of the
