In the begging women and child were considered prosperity of the husband and for the most part he was able to do whatever he wanted as long as it was in good standing with the church. It wasn’t until the 1600’s that courts and church’s start to shun the beating of women and children, however, no punishment was given to the husband that was abusing his family.
