INTRODUCITON:

GAIN AUDIENCE ATTENTION: Open with "domestic violence video" via Prezi.

According to statistics found by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Every nine seconds a woman is abused by her husband or intimate partner. At least 1 in every 4 women and 1 in every 9 men have been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in their lifetime. Most often the abuser is one of their own family. Domestic violence is a problem that somehow affects every one of us in this room at some time and is actually the leading cause of injury to women -- more than car accidents, muggings and rapes combined.

RELATE TOPIC TO AUDIENCE: As I mentioned, domestic violence is something that affects everyone of us at some time in our lives; because of this I have done extensive research over this topic and hope to share some of the startling and disturbing information about domestic violence with you today.

MAIN POINTS: In order to better understand the crime of domestic violence, we are going to look at exactly what domestic violence is, some predictors of domestic violence, and what can be done to eradicate it.

MAIN POINT 1: Let's explore what exactly domestic violence is.
· Domesticviolence.org Defines Domestic Violence and emotional abuse as behaviors used by one person in a relationship to control, gain or maintain power over the other. Partners may be married or not married; heterosexual, gay, or lesbian; living together, separated or dating. -- As defined by the Collins English Dictionary 10th Edition, the word "domestic" means "of or pertaining to the home, the household, household affairs, or the family" -- Using Lawfirms.com as a source, The law states that in most places domestic violence is not limited to individuals on a romatic basis and abuse can still be considered domestic even if the individuals do not still live together.
