Donald Duck In Mathmagic Land Essay
Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land The first thing that went through my mind once the movie started was that I was going to have no idea what Donald Duck was saying. His first couple of quotes I could barely understand but thankfully there was the “spirit” narrating. Also I was slowly able to understand what Donald Duck was saying. After that I became very interested in the rest of the movie starting with Pythagoras and the way he created music. I never really thought about music and math being that connected but the more they went on about the division of the string and how they are just fractions of the largest one, the more it started making sense. Also when Donald came in beating the drum the musicians starting tapping their feet faster to keep up with the tempo of the drums. Another concept I thought was interesting was the pentagram Pythagoras and his friends used. One could break it down into 4 different lengths. And if you added up the different lengths they were equal to the largest single length. Also that the pentagram can keep repeat itself by drawing it inside the center pentagram. The pentagram is kind of like Pascal’s triangle in the way that has many hidden secrets. Then there was the golden rectangle that everyone was crazy about. It was used in everything from buildings to sculptures to paintings. If you looked at any of their …show more content…
I don’t know if this was before the tables had holes or if it’s just another type of billiards game but I never knew how the diamonds on the sides were used. I always thought they were just decorations on the tables. They explained that first you had to find the angle to hit the target and number it 1,2,3,4, etc., but then the next angle would different and numbered 1, 1 ½, 2, 2 ½, etc. You subtract the two numbers and get where to aim at. It was all very interesting and I definitely plan on using it next time I play billiards. Maybe I will start to win some

Any set of numbers that is a repetition of one number (I.e. 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1. 7,7,7,7,7,7,7. e.t.c) will also make rectangles. Also numbers that repeat two of the numbers but not the third one (I.e. 1,1,1,2,2,2,4. 3,3,3,3,3,1,5,5,5,5.)will make rectangles that will just go off and not return to their starting point.…

Leonardo had an understanding of higher mathematics but never knew how to put it into the academic structure of numbers as in the contemporary mathematics (Cremante et al., 2005). Even after learning the mathematical language, Leonardo preferred using geographical shapes to compute equations, and this enlisted his artist abilities. In mathematics, Leonardo's major pursuit was in the exploration of the concept of spatial mechanics and proportionality (Lucertini et al., 2004). The reason Leonardo preferred using drawings in mathematics is that pure mathematics excludes the incomprehensible characteristics of reality that are better described by drawing. Since mathematics is a tool for producing outcomes, Leonardo chose to draw as his key tool in executing his proportionality and spatial awareness studies that were applied in his engineering…

I learned quite a few new things from this movie, that if you are deaf and lose your hand or fingers that you are basically an outsider to both the deaf and hearing world. I didn’t really think about that happening, but I now understand that having all your fingers and being able to show expression are really important. Another thing that I learned is back when this movie was made how deaf didn’t sign in front of hearing. This action showed me how explicit they wanted to keep their lives and how they communicate. I also learned that the separation between the two worlds has greatly reduced, compared to back then I would say we understand a lot more.…

Upon listening to the music that accompanied the movie, it became quiet clear to me the significance it held to the film. It served not only to set the various moods in the story, but also to evoke a wide gamut of feelings in the films audience. It portrayed the emotions of the characters in the film with musical harmony and dissonance, and further acted as a unifying element between events and lives in the film. The movie had a score written for it by Thomas Newman, as well as a sound track composed of various artists. The combination of these two varying music styles diversified the films ability to impact its audience, and project a message.…

Most individuals who have a general mathematical education that touches on the basics of geometry commonly know pi. The definition of pi is the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of the circle (Smoller, 2001). The majority of the population, however, does not realize the history associated with the symbol, which not only spans throughout the centuries but throughout the millenniums. The Babylonians, Egyptians, Archimedes of Syracuse, Leonardo of Pisa, Francois Viete, Leonhard Euler, Asian mathematicians such as Liu Hiu, Tsu Ch’ung-Chih, Arya Bhatta, Gottfried Leibniz, Isaac Newton, William Jones, John Machin. George Buffon and Srinivasa Ramanujan, have all played a role in the enriched past of this important mathematical symbol.…
