Dont Stop Believin

“Don’t stop Believin” The song “Don’t stop believing”, by Journey, explains how rough life can be and become at times. Everybody has their days, but it’s all about what you make out of those days that counts. You just have to keep believing and stay strong through the ups and down. Life, we all have it, but it’s hard to decide what you’re going to do in it. Keep hoping for the best, stay motivated and open your eyes to everything out there. Don’t let anything hold you back especially from your dream. One thing that nobody can actually deny is the fact things happen for a reason. In the quote, “some will win/ some will lose/some were born to sing the blues” (17, 18), consequently, there is actually truth in the line, something that people can relate to. Every person will “win or lose” at some point in their life. Clearly then, the lines become very real to the listener. The listener realizes that win or lose, sometimes you will grieve or “sing the blues” then you brush yourself off and go on. The lyric shown represents imagery and allusion. Pursuing this further, you can see the imagery if you picture somebody losing or winning. You can picture somebody grieving and in pain (singing the blues). The lyric, “some were born to sing the blues” (18), shows an allusion because they are talking about the blues. The blues is a form of music, but they are eluding it as somebody being sad and blue by talking about the color. They did not actually mean for somebody to go “sing the blues”, even though some might when they get down and sad, but I highly doubt very many people do this. The color blue has always represented a cold color and always emphasized sadness. Most people would paint their rooms in blues because it can also be a calming color, therefore relaxing you while you begin to sleep. There is always somebody that needs somebody to love. In the quote, “Just a small town girl livin’ in a lonely world”

Sonny’s Blues shows a theme of salvation, or being saved. Not only do the two brothers need salvation from the world but they need salvation from their inner beings as well. Their world is filled with drugs, imprisonment, and the evil that resides around them. Salvation comes in many forms in this short story. The narrator is haunted by the thought of not responding to his brother, a failure that continues to haunt him because he denied all his obligations to his brother, Sonny and his dying mother. Also the death of the narrator’s daughter, Grace, is actually a form of salvation. It makes the narrator write a letter to his brother in search of forgiveness. This serves as salvation for Sonny who had just got out of jail, and wants to be…

“For, while the tale of how we suffer, and how we are delighted, and how we may triumph is never new, it always must be heard. There isn’t any other tale to tell, it’s the only light we’ve got in all this darkness” (Baldwin 99). Suffering is part of the human condition that James Baldwin points out in “Sonny’s Blues” when two brothers are confronted with the darkness of Harlem life. Sonny uses heroin to get away from his pain but has found a hope of the light through blues music and wants to be a jazz musician; however, Sonny’s brother doesn’t understand about Sonny’s dream at the beginning of the story. Baldwin brings the reader into the African-American culture in Harlem to depict the internal…

Everyone goes through rough patches and struggles in their lives. People go through grief, addiction, loneliness, pain and all kinds of hardships through important points in their lives. What defines most of us and makes us who we are however, are these tragic and painful moments of struggle. The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore taught me that my own struggles and obstacles shouldn’t and cannot ever bring me down. In the introduction of the novel, Wes Moore says that “…our destinies can be determined by a single stumble down the wrong path, or a tentative step down the right one.” His statement has truly spoken to my soul, to inspire me to truly never give up and to never surrender to paths that will permanently pull me down.…

In the poem “The Weary Blues”, the poem talks about the narrator listening and watching an old Negro man playing the blues at night, singing how he “ain’t got nobody in all this world, ain’t got nobody but ma self”. This line especially sets many of different tones throughout the piece, going back and forth from melancholic to a calming tone. One might even feel a tired tone, as if the author is conveying a sense of closure to something. It could be a closure of life, or even just the end of a long, tiring day. This poem also means something more, however. The song the old man is singing relates to how many people feel at the end of a long day- alone. The old man says “I got the Weary Blues/ And I can’t be satisfied”. Can he be conveying to the reader that he understands what many people…

"A guy needs somebody--to be near him. A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody. Don't make no difference who the guy is, long's he's with you. I tell ya, I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an' he gets sick." (Steinbeck 72-3). Being alone is one of the worst things I can possible think of. One of the themes in the book Of Mice and Men exemplifies this as the quote describes. Crooks, and the black stable buck, say this quote. He describes to Lennie the pain he goes through to live his life without anyone to talk to and to just be with. The other workers on the farm would not socialize with Crooks besides the horseshoes game the men would play in the evening. Otherwise Crooks would occupy his time alone, reading books. This does not make Crooks happy his books did not fulfill his needs socially. He needed another person to talk to, or just be with. It didn't even matter whom, just a person. Lennie just happened to have been there for Crooks at that moment. Everyday people do not give enough consideration to those who live their lives without someone. Humans are social beings that need some kind of connection with others to function properly. Without a social bond a depressed state can overwhelmingly "down" a person. People also need the opportunity to brag to others a little. Curly's wife in the same novel states the following, "Well I ain't told this to nobody before. Maybe I ought'n to. I don't like Curly. He ain't a nice fella. Coulda been in the movies, an' had nice clothes—all them nice clothes they wear" (Steinbeck 89). She feels the need to tell others how great she could have been and the hopes and dreams she may someday have. She shows her feelings of hope in life. This can relate to everyday students. College guys love to tell stories from the long weekends in college. It makes a person feel good when they can tell a story filled with sarcasm and excitement to make others get a feeling of…
