“That’s all it takes, one drop of fear, to curdle love into hate” (Cain 54) – As soon as he set his eyes upon Mrs. Nirdlinger, Walter was in love. Both Walter and Phyllis may have an evident lust for money, but Walter’s infatuation with Phyllis’s being definitely encouraged his violent actions. It is interesting that Walter is already coming to realize this. Walter realizes what he has been lured in to and is trying to put some blame on Mrs. Nirdlinger’s sex appeal. Walter cannot come to grips with what he has just done to her husband.
“He was all wrong on how it was done, but he was so near right it made my lips turn numb just to listen to him” (Cain 67) – Even though Keyes isn’t completely right on what he thinks happened to Mr. Nirdlinger, he is closer than anyone else, including police. He is well seasoned in the Insurance Sales business, like Huff, and can sniff out a fishy case like this when it appears. Even though Huff did an incredible job of leaving no traces in Nirdlinger’s murder, Keyes is on to something.
“All of a sudden I sat up and turned on the light. I knew what that meant. I was in love with her” (Cain 80) – Wow. Chapter 9 unveiled some real stuff. So Sachetti is now suspicious in that he may be going with Phyllis and they may have devised a whole plot to kill Mr. Nirdlinger and pin it on Huff. Phyllis is a cold-hearted murderer. From this stance, it looks like she killed Lola’s mother to be with Lola’s father. Then she killed Lola’s father to be with Sachetti, Lola’s boyfriend. Lola has a terribly traumatic life in her teenage years thanks to Phyllis.
Page 91, Huff describes how he plans to kill Phyllis. He is going to drive her off a cliff in Sachetti’s car. This draws parallels to when Huff stated that Phyllis pushes him to the edge earlier in the novel.
