Doubt Is the Key to Knowledge
Doubt is the key to knowledge” (Persian Proverb). To what extent is this true in two areas of knowledge?
Firstly, to understand fully the proverb, definitions should be given. Doubt is the psychological status of being stuck between believing and disbelieving, involving uncertainty and distrust in a particular situation or issue or when there is lack of hard evidence and facts to support the alleged information, action, motive or decision. When you question a notion or you are open to inquisition or reassessment of it, you are having doubt. Only when you can find the justification for your doubt, one that satisfies whatever convinces you to think otherwise, then you will no longer have doubts. To have knowledge is like to have an explanation, understanding or reasoning to things in the world. Knowledge can be both personal and collective, and not all knowledge is a fact. The big bang theory , the theory of relativity, and the string theory etc. provides us explanations and reasoning to why the world is the way it is. These theories are what we know but are not necessarily the fact – we do not know if these theories are correct, but still knowing these theories count as our knowledge. Knowledge can come from our personal experience as well. This essay will seek to address the extent to which doubt is manifested as a key to knowledge regarding two areas of knowledge, Science and History.
According to Academic Press Dictionary of Science & Technology, science is the systematic observation of natural events and conditions in order to discover facts about them and to formulate laws and principles based on these facts and also the organized body of knowledge that is derived from such observations and that can be verified or tested by further investigation. There is a view that science is seen as provisional, which means that it is subjected to being falsified. In an ever-developing world were new discoveries are made all the time leading to new theories and

Certainty and doubt are very opposite of each other. While one is being sure about something, the other is having reason to believe something is not true. In 12 Angry Men doubt saved the life of the defendant. None of the Jurors were certain that he was guilty. This shows that doubt is stronger than certainty is. Doubt is very…

In this society today, science is a method of discovering how things will impact what will happen in our future. However, scientific discovery is getting the correct information through a process or steps. It also is the observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanation of phenomena (free dictionary). Science is expanding the knowledge of the world around us to make sure that the knowledge of science is available.…

A lot of people view “knowledge” as how smart you are, or what you know and what you don’t, but there is much more to what “knowledge” really is. According to Charles van Doren, knowledge is the accumulation of information and the understanding of how things work. There are three types of knowledge: knowledge in particulars, general knowledge, and certain knowledge. Particular knowledge is knowing where you are well enough to survive and general knowledge is understanding concepts. Van Doren gives these examples as a pieces of general knowledge, “All living things are born and also die,” and “...winter follows summer, and summer winter” (pg. xx). General knowledge is understanding the cause and effect of things. Finally, certain knowledge is grouped into two types: Self-evident propositions and faith. There are few self-evident propositions. Many math statements are considered certainly true (self-evident propositions), as well as real world statements such as, “A finite whole is greater than any of its parts,” as van Doren explains (pg. xxi). The other part of certain knowledge is faith. The pieces of information that God has given us through His Word. Accepting this knowledge from God as certain truths is difficult for many, and is even said to be impossible without His grace. People desire for knowledge. And the one cure for our desire of knowledge is faith (pg. xxiii). Faith answers so many questions that the other types of knowledge fail to answer.…

    Certainty vs. Doubt

I believe the dispute between the two virtues, certainty and doubt, is very controversial. Despite the clear sides that people have fixed themselves to, there are pros and cons to both. A person’s doubt can cloud their judgment. Yet it can also aid them in making the better decision, by questioning and eliminating the inferior options. On the other hand, a person’s certainty can blind them from seeing the truth. Regardless of these cons, both are necessary in the everyday choices of life. Isaiah Stock, an APLAC student at University of North Carolina, said, “Think of certainty and doubt as parts of an automobile. Certainty is considered to be the accelerator, while doubt is the steering wheel. You can get nowhere without driving --certainty—but without steering through the impediments in your way, you will surely crash and burn.” I consider this to be a very acceptable metaphor of the balanced relationship between certainty and doubt. An excess of either, on the other hand, is detrimental to one’s wellbeing. I t is necessary to balance certainty and doubt in order to accomplish all of one’s life goals. But I believe that, because doubt is so highly misconstrued, doubt is more necessary in the process of making decisions.…

Even before the era of Socrates, who taught humanity to question all matters, the human race has possessed an inexhaustible amount of curiosity. Spurring this curiosity would be the presence of doubt, and doubt is the absence of comprehension, and to an even greater extent, certainty. This desire to understand has given way to a multitude of discoveries and convictions throughout the course of human history. Although, William Lyon Phelps and Bertrand Russell had differing views on the nature of doubt and certainty it is only through the original state of doubt that one could gain the status of certainty- or at least to some degree.…

Society invariably believes the concept that certainty can allow one to achieve all of one’s desires. But this present idea is utterly ambiguous. One cannot rely on certainty because nothing is truly certain. Everything that we hold to be true hasn’t been proven wrong, but who is to say that it couldn’t be true? There is no power that states if one is completely transfixed and convinced, they will be able to subdue all that believes otherwise. Doubt is, in many ways, an amenity; reality in which certainty, would be disregarded. Certainty is a security blanket that masks the underlying truths of life.…

Certainty and doubt co-exist. The is no doubt without certainty (vice versa). The growth of the idea may be swayed by evidence (verbal, visible, or experience). Verbal evidence is not always credible and relies on the character of the person speaking; however, the speaker may conceal or twist the truth around to arrive at a logical point of view, therefore any person may believe the persons point. Lawyers, magicians, and politicians use pieces of the truth to direct certainty or doubt about their subjects. Certainty and doubt lies within an athlete’s own mind; it creates a drive that keeps them going. Belief holds certainty and doubt together.…
