In Rowan Jacobsen article “Down by the River”, he described the Colorado River. It discusses how Jacobsen traveled to the city Yuma. Jacobsen then went on to describe that the river was deprived of their annual dose of water, so the vegetation started to die. It also explained that Charlie Flynn worked with a community called Quechan and Phillips came together and worked on the restoration of the river.
Analysis
In the case study, they explained how poor Kenya was and all the pressure were on women and it was really hard for them. I can relate to this story because I am from Ethiopia and also the women have to do most of the work, most importantly the poverty there is about the same. I feel like all it takes is one or more people to help communities like this. Dr. Maathai helped Kenya’s people by planting trees and if more people had the courage to improve their environment and help countries like this, it can save a lot of people from this kind of lifestyle.
Case study questions
If more people got involved in helping Kenya like Dr. Maathai, would it help the country from becoming poor?
Is it enough to only plant trees to help the people or do we need to do more?
