In the film, when communication between Earth and Vega occurs the issue of faith arose. Faith was an issue, since many people were afraid that the extra-terrestrials in Vega might have a different belief from those on earth. Due to this, when the committee is formed, Pastor Joss is involved so that the belief of God is a part of the building of the transport object. Furthermore, when travelers were being chosen to take the trip to Vega, Dr. Arroway was not chosen because she did not believe in God and viewed faith as a mass-delusion. This upset the committee because 95 % of the world has faith in a higher being and the committee wants someone who would show his or her belief to the extra-terrestrials in Vega.
