Dr. Kale Stevenss: A Short Story
Dr. Kale Stevens sat chewing on the end of his glasses while glossing over the file he held in his right hand. For the most part he remained impassive, blank-faced while doing so, with only an occasional hmm… or umm… that could be heard being quietly emitted from his otherwise tight lips. As the seconds passed, he seemed more than lost in whatever profound thought he had over the chart’s results. Then, with the clearing of his throat, he slipped his glasses back onto his face before closing up the manila folder, well securing the paperwork he’d been studying back inside. “Well, everything looks good,” Dr. Stevens said to the half-naked man who patiently waited on the exam table across the small room from him where he sat. “I think I can pretty much release you from any further follow up care. Maybe, just a checkup or two, six months or so down the …show more content…

Stevens reciprocated with a smile. “Oh, and ah… just one more thing before you leave, Seth,” he then said, and he appeared to begin peering around the small countertop the room had provided as if in search of something. After picking up the rest of his belongings, the doctor then spotted several pamphlets had set aside which had found their way mixed in with his the rest of his paperwork. Dr. Stevens then said hesitantly, “I know we’ve talked about this before. And, I’m sure you’re just going to throw these away as soon as you leave. But, I would not be doing my duty as your doctor if I didn’t at least try to give you these and urge you to start taking your health more seriously. I really hope you find these useful and maybe even follow some of their advice. And, I know it’s too much to hope for but possibly look into some of the programs they offer.” The last part of Dr. Steven’s speech had sounded more like a question to Seth than a suggestion, but he let it go just the same as he briefly sifted through the pamphlets: Alcoholics Anonymous, Coping with Depression, Suicide Awareness, and P.T.

There are many drastic differences between the extremely respectable communication of the magnanimous Patch Adams and the almost cataclysmic communication of the normal doctoral staff of the respected medical school, the mental hospital, and the regular hospital that the medical students were trained at. These two different ways of communicating were considerably different in their intentions, their every day morals and values, and even their exceptionally diverse ways of treating patients.…

Earlier this semester I had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Kahn, and asked him some questions. I was interested in asking him questions because I had admired him as a teacher, and a person throughout the semester. I had never met someone who appeared as intelligent as Dr. Kahn, but was also down to earth. In class he spoke in a way that was easy to understand, he also accepted, and answered our questions no matter how ignorant, or insignificant.…

    Dad Narrative

Once again, I found myself wandering through the uncomfortable, brightly lit halls of the hospital. I was to find the room where my father was, an all too familiar task. "Room 443", I was told by my mother who had requested me to take my dad back to his apartment. Upon entering the elevator I let out a sigh of apprehension and turned to wearily push the button labeled "4". Whiffs of disinfectant products meandered themselves inside my nose while I looked around to see egg-white walls and nurses shuffling about in their bright, floral print scrubs. One of them approached me with a kind smile. "May I help you?" I briefly responded saying I needed to find my father, Charles Jolitz. "Go down the hall. He's in the last room on the left." Slowly making my way to the door, I speculated about what had happened to my dad this time. I entered the room thinking to myself, "Boy, he looks worse every time.", his salt and pepper hair ruffled, beard unshaven and a look of loss on his face. Though as soon as his eyes met mine, that face lit up and the corners of his mouth upturned into a smile. "My chickadee!", he exclaimed. I asked him how he was feeling and if it was time to go as the nurse carted in a wheelchair. All three of us made our way down to the lobby exchanging small talk. I dashed to my car, happy to be out of the dreariness that is a hospital. I hoped he would tell me why he was there yet again. Once in the car, he told me in a few words that he had had another episode due to taking his pain medication with a fifth of vodka and had lost control. He ended up dialing 911. My dad hurriedly changed the subject asking if I was hungry and if I would like to go have a burger. I let out another sigh. "I'm sorry, Dad. I'm not hungry, I've already eaten but I can take you to get one. We can go for lunch later this week." "Alright, sweetie.", said he. We arrived at his apartment complex and I walked him to his…
