Josef Mengele was born March 16, 1911 in Gunzburg, Germany. His parents were Karl and Walburga Mengele. Eduard Wirths. In November, Dr. Mengele was promoted to Chief Camp Physician of Auschwitz II (Birkenau), still under the supervision of Dr. Wirths. Dr. Josef Mengele was also closely related to the section process at Auschwitz. This process consisted of analyzing new prisoners at the time of their arrival and determining who lives, either to work or be experimented upon, and who is sent to the gas chambers to die (USHMM).
Dr. Josef Mengele is well known today for performing cruel, loathsome experiments that often served no true purpose outside of his entertainment. Some of his most infamous experiments involve twins. He often took data of twins, before injecting them with chloroform and dissecting them for research (Remember). Unfortunately, Mengele was able to escape the trial: “Mengele found himself in US custody. Unaware that Mengele's name already stood on a list of wanted war criminals, however, US officials quickly released him (USHMM).” He then worked in Bavaria as a farmer under false Bavaria paperwork, and soon afterwards Mengele fled to Argentina. In 1960, alarmed by the capture of Adolf Eichmann—another Nazi who fled to Argentina—Mengele moved to Brazil. He died February 7, 1979 while swimming on vacation: he had a stroke and drowned
