Dr. Schrum: A Short Story
I am still interested in telling the story of First Generation College Students (FGSs); however, a few aspects on my concept have changed since meeting with Dr. Schrum, specifically, the message and the intended audience. By refining these areas of the project, I am able to focus on next steps in order to move into the storyboard phase.

Originally, the focus of the digital story was to illuminate the barriers to success that FGSs experience. My intention was to weave statistics around actual Mason student stories. The end result was to be one where the statistics become more meaningful and the issues or barriers become a reality for the viewer. The audience for the intended digital story would have been high school and college academic staff, instructors, and policymakers. After further reflection, I will instead focus on the strengths and resiliency of FGSs, as well as their successes. I will still interview FGSs and ask them to tell their stories about overcoming barriers and experiencing successes. Persistence is itself a success. Participants in the interview portion of the digital story will include previous students I taught in a FGS cohort of UNIV 100 during Fall 2015. Additionally, I have journals that students wrote during their first week of class as well as throughout the entire semester. I will give participants access to their own journals and possibly ask them to read them aloud depending on the content covered. The new audience for this digital story will be other

Rebekah Nathan, a professor at AnyU and author of "My Freshman Year", looks into the life of a college undergraduate student. Nathan's primary methodology was participant observation (p. 5). By going from being a professor to an undergraduate student, the little things had to change. She turned into a piece of the field work, needed to utilize individual exposure, and needed to lose objectivity in order to stay focused and on track with her research. Nathan came across a few difficulties along the way due to her choice of methodology and the fact that she was much older than the average college undergraduate student. However, going through the challenges she had to face lead her to some discoveries about students of the college while also living as a student herself.…

Although I agree with the vast majority of Frank Bruni’s claims about the benefits of the ideas of community and diversity, I believe some of his prescriptions in Demanding More From College to solve the polarizing and alienating effect of the internet on the individual in our modern society are perhaps a bit naive and misguided although for the most part a good first step. Most people agree that college is supposed to be one of the most fun times of one’s fine where one meets those who are to be one’ friends for the rest of one’ life, the Frank Bruni, author of Demanding More From College thinks “there’s another dimension to college.” In our politically bipolar landscape, Bruni suggests that college students are a crucial part of solving the problem. Bruni say that we must “confront and change political and social aspects of American life that are as troubling as the economy.” I completely agree, seeing as how…

Lee described how her child grew up and “graduated” on time (par. 14). In her motherly aspect, this is positive; however, kids grow to be mature at different rates and the further mature kids do have an easier time succeeding in college. The mature college kids do not think of college as a time to beige drink, oversleep, or drive recklessly as individuals may label the college experience (par 10).…

Going to college is considered to be one of the most important parts of a person’s adult life. Lee focuses on this unnecessary pedestal that the college experience is put on. Kids treat it as an excuse to party and do not place the same level of importance on it as their parents do. Lee had this realization with her own son when she thought about how she was “paying $1,000 a week for this pleasure cruise” (52). This lead her to pull her son out of school until he was ready to go back and be serious or find a job to occupy his time more efficiently. Her son went on to have many different jobs. They were not the most glamorous, but taught him independence and how to be responsible with his own money. Lee argues that this life path got her son to a fulfilling place where he was enjoying what he was doing and had found a good job where a promotion was in his near future (2). This end result is typically why students go through college in the first place.…

Raymond Carver’s “Cathedral” explores the evolving interaction between a disparaging narrator and his wife’s blind friend, Robert. The relationship Robert upholds over the years with the narrator’s wife, as well as Robert’s inability to see, breeds discomfort within the narrator’s already prejudiced mind. Judgement towards disability and race appear at the forefront of the interactions and internal monologue of the narrator. When confronted with Robert’s disability, the narrator expresses discomfort and scoffs at the ordinary nature of his manner. The misguided assumptions he makes before meeting Robert partially stem from the narrator’s values and the resentment he has built up.…

David McCullough Jr., the son of a Pulitzer Prize winning historian, was a teacher at Wellesley High School. In June of 2012, he made a speech at the commencement ceremony for the graduating class of Wellesley High School. On this day, he gave these teenagers a very unexpected reality check. The argument of this speech is that each and every one of them students is pretty much just another statistic in our harsh real world. Throughout this speech, he gives statistics of the depressing realities of life. He also tells them repeatedly that they are “not special”.…

Bird believes most students are not in college for the reason, which is to learn, but many of them are there because it has become “the thing to do,” they want to be supported financially by their parents or tax payers, their parents want them to go, or because going to college is better than getting a nine to five job. Because students are in college for the wrong reasons, they are unhappy there. According to Bird’s findings, only 25% of students enter college because they have a desire to learn. For the other 75%, it is just a social center or even a prison. She believes they are unhappy in college because they see themselves as “unwanted adults.” Many students see their time in college as a sentence to be served before they can serve a purpose in society. Bird confirms her argument by citing research by the Carnegie Commission which estimates that 5-30% of students are in college reluctantly and that according to a study by Leon Lefkowitz, 200 of 300 students felt that a college education was a waste of money (Bird 2). In her argument about students being unhappy in college she uses all three methods of persuasion, but her main argumentative tool is pathos. She deeply explains the unhappiness that college students feel in an attempt to evoke sympathy from the audience. She also…

In today's world, a bachelor's degree has become the norm. I recognize that ability to attend Southern Illinois University Carbondale is a great privilege. My family is a tremendous source of inspiration for me. In a time when financial aid was unavailable, my grandfather worked many different jobs to support himself through college. As a boy, he acquainted me with the struggles he faced to attain an education. His fierce determination was what put him through college and law school. My parents, both victims of divorce, were unable to complete their education at a university. Instead, an unexpected miracle would compel them to find work and fulfill certain responsibilities.…
