1. Based on the skills approach, how would you assess Dr. Wood’s leadership and his relationship to the members of the Elder Care Project team? Will the project be successful? I think the project will be successful because of the dedication the team has to the project, however, Dr. Wood will need to work on his Human Skills that he seems to be currently lacking. This skills model describes three important competencies for leaders: problem-solving skills, social judgment skills, and knowledge. If you were to coach Dr. Wood using this model, what competencies would you address with him? What changes would you suggest that he make in his leadership? Based on the skills model, how would you assess Lt. Col. John Adams’s ability to meet the challenges of the base administration position? Lt. Adams is missing the two important skills conceptual and problem-solving. It appears that although his original plan was approved he did not think about a contingency plan as a back up to the what if. I believe this comes from the lack of crystallized cognitive ability due to his inexperience.
2. How would you assess his ability to meet the additional tasks he faces regarding the conversion of the base? I believe Lt. Adams need to go back to the drawing board with the new information pertaining to the acceptance of early retirement draft a new plan. It would be helpful to reach to colleagues who have faced similar situations for advice. This would address the lack of career experience and it would also take into account the environmental influence.
3. If you were to coach Adams on how he could improve his leadership what would you tell him? In the future to make sure he has a clear understanding of the decisions from the top leadership before moving forward with his plan. Consider several plans in case something changes and always have a backup plan. I would also suggest sticking to the guidelines and give himself cushion meaning not cutting too many people at once. Lastly, I would also suggest that he get some advice from individuals who have experienced similar scenarios.
