DRED Scott was a slave who was born in Southampton county, Virginia, United states in 1795. The importance of Dred Scott was that his case’s decision (Scott v Sanford) led to a court decision that helped to start the civil war. By deciding that Dred Scott cannot sue another citizen because he was a slave, it ended the hope the issue of slavery could be dealt with peacefully. Scott lived in many place throughout his life and had many masters. He lived in Virginia, Alabama, Missouri, Illinois, and Wisconsin territory. His first owner was Peter Blow; after Peter died Dred became the property of Elizabeth (one of Peter’s daughters). Later on John Emerson (a U.S. army surgeon) bought him. Then after John died his wife Irene Emerson controlled Dred. Dred tried to buy his freedom but she refused to let him go. Since Scott was “Industrious and intelligent, he was employed as a farmhand, stevedore, craftsman, and general handyman” (encyclopedia of World Biography 1). As a slave Dred wasn’t treated really fairly. As a kid Dred didn’t know his parents because they were probably sold of after he was born. He tried several times to run away but he failed and got recaptured. There were a lot of people who tried to get him and his family freedom. There were two people who were very helpful to Dred gaining his freedom. One was Taylor Blow-who backed him up during his case, she would also be the one to set him free. Another person is Calvin Chaffee-he was an abolitionist.
